Mystery shrouds boy’s death
Family, police have different versions

The death of a 16-year-old boy of Dadumajra Colony, who succumbed to injuries at the PGI this morning, has left several questions unanswered. The mystery has further compounded with the police and the victim’s family coming out with different versions.

Firing at Student Centre

Firing took place on the Panjab University campus here tonight. While no one was reportedly injured in the firing, the president of Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC), Mr Amandeep Singh, and his friends alleged that they were the targets of the firing.

Bheora’s arrest to cast shadow on jailbreak trial

The arrest of Paramjit Singh Bheora, Babbar Khalsa International’s alleged operations chief, is set to cast its shadow on the progress of the Burail jailbreak trial.

The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, in its meeting held today approved the proposal to form a dispute settlement and redressal committee to look into the litigations relating to water and sewerage bills.

Kiranjit rape case: rally held, memo given to Governor

Eight years since the Kiranjit rape case, a village continues to struggle and fight for justice for three of its villagers who fought to bring the guilty to book. They, however, ended up facing life imprisonment in an alleged case of murder.

City hub of socio-economic growth: Rodrigues

The Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd.), today said Chandigarh was fast emerging as a hub of socio-economic growth. Dhanraj needs ‘dhan’ to live
Chandigarh, March 21
Poverty has become life threatening for 22-year-old Dhanraj, who has been incapacitated by kidney failure and hit by lack of funds. “I want to live, but life comes for a cost and that too at Rs 2 lakh for somebody like me,” he laments.

Protest against new liquor vends

Residents of Sectors 15 and 45 here today strongly protested against new vends in their areas. While the residents of Sector 45 blocked the road in the sector, residents and shopkeepers of Sector 15 organised a dharna against the location of new liquor vend in the sector. The shops in the area were also closed in protest.

Bank employees stage dharna
Chandigarh, March 21
Protesting against the negative attitude of the Central Government towards their demands for revision of pension ceiling and other related matters, the office-bearers of the State Bank of India Employees' and Officers' Association staged a dharna in front of the LHO Building here today.

The youth president of the Mohali circle of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Mr Jodhbir Singh Shergill, has asked two TV channels to offer written apololgies for telecasting programmes which had hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikhs.

Residents demand road channels
Chandigarh, March 21
The Residents Welfare Forum, Sector 46,here on Sunday demanded the provision of road channels on the V-5 and V-6 roads in the sector. Mr Kidar Nath Sharma and Mr S.S. Chawla, president and general secretary, respectively, of the forum, alleged that the road channels had not been re-built by the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh(MCC) despite repeated representations.

6 boys held for stealing garments
Chandigarh, March 21
The police has arrested six boys on the charges of stealing readymade garments from a shop in Kajheri village. Sources in the Sector 36 police station said six students were taken into custody following a complaint made by Suresh Kumar of Kajheri.

Active life can prevent diabetes, says doc

A lecture on diabetes by Dr Anil Bhansali, Head, Department of Endocrinology, PGIMER, will be delivered on March 25 at 3 pm in the auditorium of the Advanced Paediatric Centre at the campus to address some issues related to the disease.

Kanika leads in Chandigarh Open Golf
Chandigarh, March 21
It was Kanika Minocha's day. Yes this 17-year-old Chandigarh girl returned a two-over card of 74 to take the lead on the opening day of the 14th Chandigarh Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship on the lush course of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today. Kanika started very well returning a par 36 inthe first nine. But two bogeys on the return nine saw her lose two strokes to finish with a card of 74. At the end of the first round Kanika was leading by seven strokes over her nearest rival, Parnita Garewal, who returned a card of 81. Just two strokes behind Parnita was Dimple Minocha, mother of Kanika.
