Police opens fire on mob in Goa
Tribune News Service

Mumbai, March 4
Simmering tensions in Goa’s mining belt got out of hand today after a contingent of the Rapid Action Force opened fire on a mob comprising RSS workers, who were terrorising Muslim residents of Sanvordem town.

State government sources from Panaji said that prohibitory orders under Section 144 had been imposed after RSS activists attacked properties owned by Muslim residents in Sanvordem and neighboring Curchorem towns.

Trouble began on Wednesday when activists of the RSS demolished an illegal mosque situated on government land. The structure was demolished by a mob after a localcourt stayed the government’s plea for removing the structure.

On Friday, following rumours that a crowd of Muslims from Bhatkal and Hubli in Karnataka were arriving to rebuild the mosque, RSS activists organised riots and attacked properties owned by Muslims.

The police had fired in the air to keep peace on Friday.
