The degrees of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) were conferred upon Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G. Madhavan Nair, who is also the Chairman of the Space Commission of India and Secretary to the Union Government, Department of Space, and Prof Ram Parkash, acting president of the Haryana Congress and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University.

The Union Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, was the chief guest, while the GJU Chancellor and Haryana Governor, Dr A.R. Kidwai, state Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Education Minister Phool Chand Mulana, Minister of State for Urban Development Savitri Devi Jindal, local MP Jai Prakash and Vice-Chancellors of other universities in the state were among the guests of honour.

The guests, who arrived at the huge “pandal” in the form of an academic procession, got a standing ovation from those present at the venue. The function began with a soulful rendition of “Saraswati Vandana” by university students.

The varsity Vice-Chancellor, Dr R.P. Bajpai, delivered the welcome address, in which he exhorted the students to rise above petty things and develop a cosmopolitan outlook to make their country the best in the world.

The Defence Minister called upon the university teachers and students to make all-out efforts for bridging the technology divide in our society by “connecting laboratory to the land.” He observed that there was an immediate need to ensure rural reconstruction by adopting an integrated public-private sector participation model. “The universities, Panchayati Raj institutions and NGOs can play a significant role in changing the face of rural India,” he maintained.

Congratulating young graduates and postgraduates, Mr Mukherjee advised them to face the challenges of life with a positive and constructive attitude.

Dr Kidwai awarded Ph.D degrees to 35 scholars, while Mr Hooda gave away gold medals and merit certificates to 89 outstanding students. Dr Bajpai awarded degrees to students who had passed their courses in the academic sessions from 2001 to 2005.
