Leh, Kargil still tense
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 11
After three days of violence, no untoward incident was reported today in the twin towns of Leh and Kargil in the Ladakh region where curfew is being strictly enforced. However, communal tension continues to prevail in both towns.

Reports said a futile attempt was made by miscreants to set ablaze a monastery near Leh in the wee hours today.

These towns witnessed incidents of arson and violence during the past three days over the alleged desecration of the holy Koran.

The SSP of Kargil, Mr Danish Rana, said curfew was being strictly enforced in the town following yesterday’s incidents of arson.

Processions were taken out in the neighbouring villages of Sankoo, Panikhar and Chiktam and these dispersed peacefully.

Army and paramilitary forces were patrolling the two towns and other sensitive areas. A strong contingent of the police led by a DSP was camping at Budh-Kharboo from where the trouble started.

The Nubra valley was calm as tension was defused there by holding meetings of religious and political leaders.

SRINAGAR: At least 40 miscreant, 35 in Leh and five in Kargil have been rounded up, Mr K. Rajendra Kumar, Inspector-General of Police, told The Tribune from Leh today.
