Srinagar, January 21
Even as the police and security agencies continued their efforts to prevent any untoward incident for the Republic Day celebrations, militants lobbed a grenade at a CRPF post, injuring five persons, including three civilians, at Budshah Chowk here this afternoon.

The police said the militants hurled a grenade towards the CRPF bunker at Budshah Chowk around 2 p.m. today. Three pedestrians, one of them a woman, and two CRPF men were injured in the explosion. A CRPF vehicle parked nearby was partially damaged in the explosion.

All vital areas and installations here have been sanitised, according to senior police officers here. The main function for the Republic Day is being held at the Bakshi stadium here. Security has been further tightened across the city and at vital installations like the Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, Doordarshan Kendra, Srinagar, and other major offices. All measures have been taken to thwart the designs of militants bent upon creating trouble on the occasion, a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, the moderate faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference has condemned the alleged harassment of innocent persons in the name of security ahead of the R-Day celebrations. A spokesman of the APHC claimed that security forces indulged in excesses against the people and arrested innocents ahead of the R-Day celebrations. The spokesman further called to observe the day as “black day”, and sought to address the root cause by resolving the 57-years long-pending Kashmir issue.
