City continues to shiver

Foggy days, biting cold and poor visibility are here to stay. With the cold wave showing no signs of letting up and the sun playing truant, the city continued to shiver as the mercury dipped further. The maximum temperature fell by six degrees, recording a chilly 11°C while the 6.8°C was the minimum temperature recorded in the city.

Bid to change look of town for better
Mohali, January 4
In a significant step which will change the look of the town for the better, the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority has armed itself with plans to take over a substantial part of large vacant spaces in front of houses and other buildings for development.

CHB team demolishes illegal constructions
Chandigarh, January 4
A team of the Chandigarh Housing Board today carried out demolition of illegal constructions in Sectors 45-C and D here. Additional rooms, an additional storey in certain cases, were demolished in at least nine houses.

Passport instruction booklets in Punjabi, Hindi soon

All you Punjabis here is another reason to cheer. The Regional Passport Office in the city from next month will be providing free booklets in Punjabi and Hindi with the complete instructions for filling application forms for a passport.

The arrest of a senior manager with a mobile phone company has led to a controversy. Soon after he was arrested on the allegations of trespassing, the manager claimed that he had been implicated in a false case at the instance of an advocate, whom he had hired for a divorce case.

The local police today claimed to have arrested three persons in connection with the yesterday’s assault incident at the Mauli Jagran police post in which a constable of the Chandigarh Police and several other persons were injured.

4-year-old girl raped
Mohali, January 4
A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 50-year-old person in Jagatpura Colony here. A complaint in this regard was made to the police by the father of the child, Santosh Kumar, today.

2 held for stealing engine parts

Two persons were arrested by the police on a charge of stealing engine parts from a factory located in the Phase IX industrial area here. According to the police, the arrested persons were Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Kumbra village, and Jasveer Singh, a resident of Safipur village.

CBSE Class X, XII exam dates

Class XII examinations to be conducted by the CBSE will be held from March 1 to April 8 while Class X examinations will begin on March 2 and end on March 27. The Class X examinations would begin with the social science examination followed by the home science examination on March 4.

The CBI Special Judge today concluded the arguments on the charges of corruption against former UT Home Secretary N.K. Jain and Superintendent in the UT Transport K.B. Goel. The case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the two had been registered by the CBI.

Justice Tapen Sen transferred to Kolkata
Chandigarh, January 4
Mr Justice Tapen Sen of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been transferred to Calcutta High Court. He has been transferred on his own request. As per the notification issued in this regard, he has been asked to join at Kolkata by January 16.
