Raikote family scion sees better future for Indo-Pak ties

The police today booked an Akali leader, Sukwant Singh “Tillu” and his accomplice Malkiat Singh on the charge of assaulting a person, trespassing into a plot near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, with the intention to take forcible possession of the plot.

Councillors greet MLA for getting grant

Local Municipal councillors greeted and thanked Ms Razia Sultana, Parliamentary Secretary and MLA Malerkotla, for impressing upon the Chief Minister to get grants worth more than Rs 5 crore for the development of the local town that had remained ignored for decades after the independence.

Setting up of military academy in Punjab hailed
Ludhiana, December 2
Vijay Sathi an ex-MLA and a senior Congress leader has welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to set up a military academy in Punjab. Mr Sathi observed, it showed the Prime Minister’s far sightedness and his deep regard for the unmatched sacrifices made by the people of the state.

Leaders of various political and social organisations paid homage to Gurpreet Singh of 20 Sikh Regiment whose mortal remains were consigned to the flames with full military and state honours at his native village Kalsian near here yesterday.

PAU shifts focus to organic farming
Ludhiana, December 2
Keeping in tune with the modern day needs, Punjab Agricultural University has shifted focus on two emerging concepts in farming. Growing foods organically and calibrating variable inputs through precision process. For these two projects, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has given a grant of Rs 43.32 lakh to the Department of Agronomy and Agro-meteorology.

Internal assessment marks to be reduced
Ludhiana, December 2
To curb “gross misuse” of internal assessment provision for MCom students in Panjab University, the Faculty of Business Management and Commerce, one of the decision making bodies, has recommended to reduce the percentage of internal assessment to 20 per cent.

Spirited performance by dental college students

Students of Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College and Hospital presented a colourful cultural programme during the annual day celebrations of the institution here last evening. The show negated the common belief that the doctors were just bookworms with no artistic skills.

World AIDS Day at Khalsa college
Ludhiana, December 2
The Red Cross Society of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, organised an AIDS awareness quiz and poster-making contest to mark World AIDS Day here yesterday. The quiz tested the five participating teams on knowledge regarding the fatal disease AIDs. The participants were from the commerce, humanities, science, computer science and business management streams. The BBA team emerged winner while BCA stood second and B.Sc was third.

Two cities of Punjab, Ludhiana and Amritsar have been chosen by children’s channel Nicklodean, to launch massive school programmes. According to a press note, kids of prominent schools of the cities will be familiarised with Nicktoons in an interactive fun loving format.

Nutrition programme concludes
Ludhiana, December 2
The Government of India ‘s Food and Nutrition Board, Ludhiana unit, organised a five-day Nutrition Education Training Programme in Hoshiarpur last week, The programme was attended by supervisors, ICDS Department, CPDOs, ACPDOs of Nawanshahar, Gurdaspur and was inaugurated by the SDM, Mr Pritam Singh, Hoshiarpur.

KVM honours shooters
Ludhiana, December 2

Shooters from Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School who represented Ludhiana and Punjab at different inter-district and national rifle shooting championships and earned fame for the city and their school were honoured by the school management committee during the closing ceremony of the 61st Annual Athletics Meet of the school yesterday.
