Amitabh on road to recovery
Tribune News Service

Mumbai, December 1
Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who underwent surgery at the local Leelavati Hospital for intestinal problems last evening, is improving, his close friend and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh told mediapersons outside the hospital today.

Mr Singh, who was one of the first visitors to call on Bachchan, said the actor was in the Intensive Care Unit and his vital parameters were functioning normally.

“Amitabh Bachchan has thanked the media and the people for showing concern towards his health and wishing him speedy recovery,” he said.

Doctors operated on Bachchan when they detected diverticulitis or perforation of the small intestine. According to doctors, pouches or bags had formed on the intestine and one of these had burst, causing the actor much pain.

In normal cases, medication is sufficient to cure diverticulitis but in Bachchan’s case surgery became necessary as one of the pouches had burst.

Three teams of doctors began operating on Bachchan at 6 pm yesterday and the procedure went on till 10 pm.

The actor, whose busy schedule extended till June next year, will be out of action till the middle of January. Sources said the telecast of “Kaun Banega Crorepati” may be rescheduled due to Bachchan’s illness.

Today, visitors thronged the hospital to greet Bachchan. Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray and his wife, Anil Ambani, Sahara group boss Subrato Roy and Bollywood personalities Madhur Bhandarkar, Ram Gopal Varma and Tinu Anand were among those who called on him.
