BJP MLA, 6 others gunned down in UP

Lucknow, November 29
Gang-war erupted in a virulent form in eastern Uttar Pradesh this afternoon when a BJP MLA from Mahmudabad, Krishnanand Rai, his gunner and five of his associates were ambushed in an attack reportedly by a rival gang.

Tension was palpable in the area as shops closed and four PAC companies were deployed in different parts of the districts, informed Home Secretary Alok Sinha.In the state capital BJP supporters stopped traffic on the main Vidhan Sabha Marg in front of the BJP office demanding President’s rule in the state.

The incident took place this afternoon near Basaniya village in Bhawarkon police station area on the Ghazipur-Ballia border, about 112 km from Varanasi.

Krishnanand Rai, allegedly a don turned MLA, was pitted against Independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari , an accused in the Mau riot, had surrendered to the police and is now cooling his heels in the Lucknow jail.
