Thousands converge to catch glimpse of golden palki
Phagwara/Jalandhar, November 28 As the bus, carrying the Guru Granth Sahib kept in a palki, from New Delhi on its way to Pakistan entered Phagwara this evening, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President, Mr Paramjit Singh Sarna, asserted that neither Sikh religion nor the Panth were the personal fiefdom of the SAD President. “I’m simply overwhelmed by the massive response the sangat is getting in Punjab.” Shiromani Akali Dal has been staying away from the event. The procession carrying the palki, preceded by hundreds of buses full of devotees, reached Phagwara at around 7 pm. However, it took nearly one-and-a-half hours for the procession to inch through the sea of devotees who had lined up along the GT Road. Most of them had been waiting for nearly ten hours. Though the police, along with volunteers, tried its best to manage the constant traffic flow on the National Highway No.1, the other entry and exit points of the city were cluttered with traffic chaos. Among those who welcomed the golden palki were the Local Congress MLA, Mr Joginder Singh Mann, and the dissident leader of Badal Dal, Mr Gurjit Singh Khalsa. Mr Paramjit Singh Sarna, President, DSGMC, Jathedar Darshan Singh Khalsa, former Head Priest, Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar Puran Singh, former Head Priest, Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, got down from the bus to thank the sangat. They were presented siropas as slogans of “Bole So Nihal” and crackers rented the skies. Later, around 9 pm, the palki entered Jalandhar, which was similarly thronged by the crowds waiting to catch a glimpse of the procession since morning. Though the historic procession reached the city much later than expected, the will of people to pay their obeisance had not dampened at all. They converged beside the Lyallpur Khalsa College campus along the G.T. Road, and could be seen serving refreshments to the devotees travelling with the palki. This also led to some traffic chaos. The golden palki is expected to reach the Holy City of Amritsar tommorow morning where Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh will join the procession as it crosses the Wagah border towards its destination—the Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. At the Wagah border, the Chief Minister of Punjab (Pakistan), Mr Parvaiz Elahi, is expected to welcome the procession. The palki will later be handed over to the Pakistan Gurdwara Management Committee (PGMC), instead of installing it in place of the existing marble palki at Gurdwara Janamasthan at Nankana Sahib, as had earlier been decided by the DSGMC. |
NABARD approves Rs 13 cr grant for water scheme
Kapurthala, November 28 The scheme is likely to benefit nearly 3 lakh people living in the district, who are not getting potable water for decades. “There are only seven small water supply schemes in the area due to which only 35,000 people from 12 villages are getting clean drinking water,” Mr Khaira said. “The rest are getting saline water, which is causing tooth decay and other health hazards among the local inhabitants.” He said out of the total grant, Rs 10.36 crore would go to Bholath, where over 2 lakh residents living in 68 villages would be benefited. “An amount of Rs 2.1 crore will go to Sultanpur and Rs 1.25 crore have been earmarked for Kapurthala,” the Congress leader added. Handing over the list of villages that would get water supply under the scheme, Mr Khaira said these included 38 villages from the Nadala block, 68 villages from the Dhilwan block and five villages from the Sultanpur Lodhi block. Taking credit for the achievement, he claimed that he had taken keen interest for getting the sanction from top levels and had personally met NABARD’s Chief General Manager, Mr C.R. Patnaik, in Mumbai in this regard. Criticising his opponent from the Bholath assembly, MLA Bibi Jagir Kaur, the Congress leader alleged, “Despite the fact she has been in power for a long time, she has failed miserably in fulfilling the demand of her electorate. I can now boast of having succeeded in getting such a huge grant for the residents even though I’m not in the MLA’s seat.” |

The activists also protested against the decision of the government to withdraw the holidays on Ambedkar Jayanti, Shahid Baba Jeevan Singh and Bhagat Kabir. —TNS |

Kulwinder Singh said he had sent his claim for an entry into the world’s most respected record book, and had received a letter from their London office asking him to apply through the Guinness website. The letter mentioned that after the application registered, a number would be assigned to the record seeker and researchers of Guinness would get back to him to confirm or reject his claim for the record. However, Kulwinder and his dog’s achievement would get recognition in the national record book in 2006, as per Ms Vijaya Ghose, editor, Limca Book of Records.
