Stage set for VAT implementation in UT

Value Added Tax will finally be implemented in Chandigarh. The ongoing winter session of Parliament is expected to give a formal clearance. The implementation of VAT had been held up in Chandigarh, as it was, so far, governed by the Punjab General Sales Tax Act, 1952.

Panchkula resident dies in accident
Banur, November 24
A Panchkula resident was killed on the spot while his wife and grandson had a miraculous escape in a head-on collision involving a car and a truck on the Chandigarh-Rajpura highway this afternoon.

Bomb hoax in Sector 26
Chandigarh, November 24
Panic gripped Sector 26 after an unclaimed suitcase was discovered by a passer-by. At around 4 pm a passerby raised an alarm after spotting the suitcase lying in the middle of the Madhya Marg.

45 structures demolished in Khuda Lahora
Chandigarh, November 24
At least 45 structures were pulled down by the demolition squad of the Chandigarh Administration in Khuda Lahora village here today. The structures had been raised on around 10 acres of land that had been acquired by the Administration in February last for raising a complex.

Unique pledge on marriage anniversary

On the occasion of their 8th marriage anniversary, Saroj and Ajay Mittal did not exchange gifts or indulge in celebrations, instead they took a pledge to donate their bodies, a thought that rarely occurs to one at the age of 33.

E-Governance Solution Centre set up

The Society for the Promotion of Information Technology in Chandigarh and IBM has set up an e-Governance Solutions Centre under the aegis of the Department of Information Technology.

Married woman commits suicide
Chandigarh, November 24
She killed herself, but not before exonerating her husband. In her suicide note, a 32-year-old housewife, Sunita wished to marry him in the next birth. She allegedly ended her life by hanging herself at her Sector 29 residence this morning.

Gang selling underweight LPG cylinders busted
Chandigarh, November 24
The Operation Cell of the Chandigarh Police today unearthed a gang involved in selling underweight LPG cylinders in the city. The police claimed to have arrested five persons red-handed while they were transferring LPG illegally.

Four fresh cases registered against Aman Verma
Chandigarh, November 24
The Chandigarh Police today registered four fresh cases of cheating against Aman Verma, the alleged ‘mastermind’ of the abduction-for-ransom case. Besides this the police has also booked Manoj and Honey, two accomplices of Aman, in the new cases.
