With elections in the state about a year away, the Punjab Government is set to appease a large chunk of voters with sops like jobs for youth, reservations for Dalits in the allotment of residential and industrials plots and permits to operate buses.

Badal asks workers to end factionalism

At a function on the occasion of the 230th birth anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Badrukhan village, birthplace of the Maharaja, some senior leaders of the SAD, including Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, secretary-general of the SAD, today projected Mr Parkash Singh Badal as the next Chief Minister of the state.

Plane hijacker to seek reinstatement by SGPC

Known for hijacking a plane without any weapon in 1982, Gurbaksh Singh (70) yesterday announced his plan to peddle his way to Amritsar to seek his reinstatement by the SGPC, which threw him out of job seven years back.

Another Pak intruder shot
Gurdaspur, November 13
The Border Security Force killed another Pakistani intruder on the border in early hours today. The DIG, BSF, Mr V.K. Sharma, told The Tribune that a BSF patrolling party spotted an intruder near the Saharon border outpost this morning.

Reacting to reports in a section of the media, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders today asked the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to come clean on his links with the Congress legislator, Mr Arvind Khanna.

Kanuwan panchayat joins Congress
Kanuwan (Gurdaspur), November 13
In a major setback to the SAD/BJP, the entire panchayat of Kanuwan has joined the Congress. All 11 BJP and SAD members of the panchayat, including the sarpanch, Ms Anita Thakur, joined the Congress in the presence of the Minister for PWD, Punjab, Mr Pratap Singh Bajwa.

Mr Avinash Chander, a senior dalit leader and a former BSP leader, joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) in presence of SAD leader Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal here on Saturday.

Hindu jatha may cut short Katasraj visit

Asst Prof’s biodata in US journal
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 13
The International Journal of Thermal Spray Technology published by ASM International, USA, has published the biodata of Dr Harpreet Singh, Assistant Professor of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College (BBSBEC), for his research work in the development of high temperature corrosion resistant materials. The college Principal, Dr D.S. Hira, told mediapersons that it was a significant achievement for the college.

Ropar school wins bhangra contest

Even as the historians are unanimous over the findings that legendry Punjabi poet Shah Mohammad belonged to Wadala Veeram village (Amritsar), but they have failed to confirm his date of birth even after 150 years of the world-famous ‘Jangnama’ (Battle of Punjab), written after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The Punjab Education Department has declined the request of the education society running Caption Amol Kalia (CAK) Fertilizer Model Senior Secondary School, NFL, Nangal, to issue a no objection certificate for affiliation with CBSE.
