Eight dengue cases in city
Jalandhar, October 22 The patients, suffering from fever and low count of blood platelets, are pouring in from the Pashoriyan Mohalla and Model House colonies here. Some cases have also been referred to Ludhiana hospitals. The Health Department has deputed a team of doctors to the affected areas of Pashoriyan Mohalla, where a makeshift camp has also been set up. This afternoon, two women, named Santosh and Harpreet, were confirmed of having the tropical viral disease. Both are under treatment at the Doaba Hospital. Mr G.L. Goel, Director, Health Services said hundreds of patients with suspected dengue were under observation. He, however, put the number of confirmed cases at four. Meanwhile, families of the persons, who complain of bleeding from the gums or teeth, have been asked to rush the patients to the hospital immediately as these are considered symptoms of a serious form of dengue. The other form (DEN I) is easily controllable with the help of general medicine, say doctors. People have also been told to ensure mosquito-free sanitary conditions. The Civil Hospital itself has admitted 34 patients suspected to be suffering from dengue and 10 of them are being treated in a special isolation ward. The Doaba Hospital too has reported a dozen of such cases while six patients, including a pregnant woman and a child, have been referred to hospitals in Ludhiana. Mr Jai Ram, whose wife Ms Gyan Devi and grandson Asheesh Kumar are in the special isolation ward of the Civil Hospital, said the number of people with high fever was increasing in his area. One dengue patient, named Nand Ram, is being treated in the special isolation ward since last Saturday. Dr Ranvir Singh, Medical Superintendent, Civil hospital though said that there was no need to panic and the patients were recovering. Dengue fever makes the blood platelet count fall drastically from the normal count of 1,50000, said doctors and most patients here have a low platelet count, they added. But some patients, they said, have reported a rise in the platelet count and were improving. Meanwhile, Dr GS Mann, in-charge (Medicine), Civil Hospital said, “Simple dengue fever is no cause for worry. The symptoms of serious dengue fever include high temperature and severe body ache, which is not the case here. The fever and pain is accompanied by cough and congestion in the eyes. The fever has a course of five to seven days and afterwards the blood platelet count becomes normal.” Dr Mann added that in the serious form of dengue called the Hemorrhage Shock Dengue, the patients start bleeding from the gums, or in the urine. Blood spots also start appearing on the skin and blood pressure also falls, he said. Doctors here said the disease occurs when one is bitten by infected mosquitoes which flourish in filthy conditions. Hence sanitary conditions in residential areas must be maintained at all costs to stop mosquitoes from flourishing, they advised. Though there is no vaccine against dengue, Dr Mann said Paracetamol with painkiller should be administered to control the fever and avoid any new infections. “But Asprin or Disprin must be avoided at all costs.”

NIT students remanded in judicial custody
Jalandhar, October 22 Chief Judicial Magistrate KK Kareer remanded the students, who were arrested on Oct 20, to 14 days judicial custody. They were also taken for medical examination at the Civil Hospital here. Inspector Lakha Singh said the students had only confessed to light ragging and had denied that they ever indulged in sexual exploitation of their juniors. He said that another student Rahul, named in the FIR by Amit’s father, was also being interrogated by the police while the whereabouts of the accused girl Namita could not be ascertained. Meanwhile, continuing their agitation, hundreds of students of the institute today held a peace march in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum demanding a high level inquiry. Punjab plan to rein in cyber crime
Jalandhar, October 22 Announcing this on the occasion of state-level police commemoration day here yesterday, Mr S.S. Virk, DGP, Punjab Police, however, did not specify as to where such police station would be set up, though he hinted that it could come up in Mohali or any other important city. Mr Virk said that technology related crime, which had increased with the coming up of IT boom, turned out to be a major challenge for the police department. To resolve such cases, the police personnel were being trained through a series of training programmes and seminars, he added. On the issue of changing uniform for police personnel as suggested by his predecessor, Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Mr Virk said that changing the attitude of the police employees was far more important. “If the policemen can become more disciplined and people-friendly by a change in their uniform, I would do that as my first priority”, he said. The proposals put forth by Mr Siddiqui to bring about amendments in the 144-year old Police Act were lying pending before the Punjab government, he added.

Debate on terrorism a political stunt: CPI secy
Jalandhar, October 22 In an interview to The Tribune, Mr Jagroop Singh of CPI said the parties were digging out an issue of no relevance in times when six farmers including one couple had committed suicide due to agricultural debt. “None of the parties are ready to save the farmers.” The CPI secretary said debates on history do not provide any solutions. “Only research-based solutions can bring people out of misery in the state.” He condemned the parties for not debating on issues of unemployment and stemming female feoticide. He said the debate showed falling standards of politics where parties were resorting to stunts in order to mislead the people and make youth go wayward. Also attacking the state government’s plans to promote contract farming, Mr Jagroop Singh said it was only going to help the rich farmers. “The suggestions give no way out to the small farmers who will be left on the road if these inhuman policies are implemented.” Talking about the plans of CPI in the state, the secretary said the party was going to hold the “Mela Gadri Babeyan Da” from October 26 to 30 to bring to people’s attention real life role models.
