MC okays multipurpose parking pass

In a major “people-friendly” decision aimed at benefiting persons frequenting different parking lots in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today approved the monthly multipurpose parking pass for cars and scooters.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today simultaneously swooped down upon residences of Moga’s Deputy Commissioner Mandeep Singh and retired IAS officer J.S. Kesar in Sector 34 here.

Nagi retires; Gill is new PGI Ortho head
Chandigarh, September 30
Dr Onkar Nath Nagi, Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physiotherapy, PGI, today retired after having served as the head for 17 years. Dr Nagi will now join Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, as a senior consultant. During his service at the PGI, he made significant contribution in the field of orthopaedics.

13 kids fall ill after meal at creche
Chandigarh, September 30
At least 13 children were taken ill after taking their afternoon meal at a company- run crèche at Parwanoo today. All children, aged between one and three years, were admitted to the Paediatrics emergency of the PGI here. The victims were reported to be out of danger.

The Nayagaon rape victim today alleged that she and her mother were “shooed” away from the DGP Punjab’s office who reportedly refused to meet her even as she continued to beg for justice waiting to be heard.

4 structures razed on UT periphery
Chandigarh, September 30
Within a few days of registering an FIR against certain colonisers for carving out and selling plots on the periphery of Khuda Ali Sher village, the UT enforcement staff today partially demolished at least four structures which had come in violation of the Periphery Act on UT’s land.

Probe against 4 councillors

Taking cognizance of the continuous absence of at least four councillors from the General House meetings of the Municipal Council, the Urban Estates Department has initiated an inquiry.

Officer questions policy lacuna

A lacuna in the policy pertaining to deputation of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to the Central Police Organisation (CPO) has resulted in junior IPS officers unable to get the benefit of serving in hard areas.

Air Cmdr Srivastava takes over charge
Chandigarh, September 30
Air Cmdr R.K. Srivastava took over as Air Officer Commanding, No. 3 Base Repair Depot here today. Prior to assuming his appointment, he was serving at Air Headquarters in New Delhi. He takes over from Air Cmde S.P.S. Virk, who retired after a career spanning 32 years.

Bonding time for senior citizens
Chandigarh, September 30
It was a meeting that could warm the severest of hearts! A ‘mel-jol’ organised by the governing body of the Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association at the Home for the Aged and Destitute (Old Age Home), Sector 15, to celebrate the Senior Citizens’ Day was met with great gusto and enthusiasm today.

As part of the celebrations to commemorate October 1 as Senior Citizens’ Day, the Sector-35 chapter of the Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association felicitated their senior members and a senior social activist at a special function yesterday.

Seminars on emigration
Chandigarh, September 30
The Milestone Immigration Consultants is currently holding a series of seminars in more than 12 cities of Punjab and neighbouring states to educate people about the rules, regulations and requirements for those seeking emigration abroad, a press release said here today. The organisation is managed by members of the Canadian Society of Immigration.

2 flesh trade rackets busted, 7 held
Panchkula, September 30
The Pinjore police has busted a flesh trade racket in Rattpur Colony, Pinjore, and arrested four persons, including three women on charges of immoral trafficking. The police crackdown was led by the DSP, Kalka, Mr Rajinder Singh. A special team was constituted for the purpose, after a decoy customer from amongst the policemen had tied up with the pimp or the call girls’ directly. Cops, in plain clothes, were deputed near the house, before the accused met with the decoy customers.

‘Abused’ cop’s father registers formal complaint
Panchkula, September 30
The Panchkula police has received a formal complaint from Mr Mamchand, father of ITBP Constable, Raj Kumar. He has alleged that his son was illegally confined, physically abused and drugged by a Deputy Commandant of the ITBP.

Cyclist killed after being hit by car
Chandigarh, September 30
A cyclist was killed while two others sustained injuries in separate mishaps. The theft of a vehicle and gold ornaments were also reported to the police. An alleged two-wheeler thief was taken into custody, while a minor girl was abducted in the city during the past 24 hours.

Bank postpones auction of defaulters’ property
Mohali, September 30
The State Bank of Patiala, Phase X, here had to postpone the auction of the property of its loan defaulters today when more than one “property owner” reached the venue claiming that the property had already been sold off by the defaulters.

Gp Capt B.K. Sood has been appointed Station Commander of the MiG 27/29 TETTRA School at the Air Force High Grounds here. Prior to this appointment, he was Chief Engineering Officer of a forward airbase. He takes over from Gp Capt P.P. Khandekar, who has been posted to Hyderabad.

The youth need to be sensitised towards the emotional vacuum that senior citizens face when they are forced to stay without their families, at a time when they need care and love. A step in this direction was taken when students of Hansraj Public School visited the Senior Citizen Homes at Sectors 43, 30 and 15.

Book of poems released
Chandigarh, September 30
Powerful and poignant readings from her latest anthology of poems, “As a Fountain in the Garden” marked Indo-American poet and writer Kamla K. Kapur’s book release by eminent scholar, historian and writer, Dr B.N. Goswami, at the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi auditorium here today. A series of 31 poems connected with a common theme of the suicide by Kamla’s former husband, poet Donald Dean Powell, in 1993, brought her to the realisation that “grief could be a gift”.

Mega musical show at Kalagram
The mega musical show ‘Yaraan Naal Baharaan’ organised by the Etc Punjabi and Zee Punjabi TV channels got off to a majestic launch at Kalagram here on Friday. New young singer Feroze opened up the show with a song ‘Luk luk’ after the Scorpio dance group had done some stage warming.
