Public dealing comes to standstill
Trade unions’ strike in city near-total

Offices wore a deserted look and public dealing came to a standstill, causing inconvenience to thousands of people, as trade unions went on strike on a call given by the Left-backed National Platform of Mass Organisations (NPMO) here today.

Strike throws life out of gear
Jagraon, September 29
Hundreds of workers belonging to various unions today held a dharna, on a call given the Central Trade Union, in front of the SDM's office and also blocked the traffic on Jagraon-Ludhiana GT Road for about two hours.

Report indicts MC, PSEB officials
Electrocution of six persons

Ludhiana, September 29
Municipal Corporation’s controversial rejection of a magisterial probe into the electrocution of six persons has fallen flat with the much-awaited report of the Chief Electrical Inspector (CEI) of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) indicting both MC and PSEB officials for being negligent in duty.

Rash driver convicted for killing boy
Ludhiana, September 29
The Judicial Magistrate, Mr Jaspal Verma, has convicted a negligent car driver, Shamsher Singh, on charges of causing death of a 12- year-old boy, Vinni Nayyar, resident of Partap Nagar. The driver has been sentenced to two-year imprisonment.

Four factories sealed 
Ludhiana, September 29
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation today sealed four factories in the city for non-payment of house tax. A factory in Phase -7, Focal Point, (property number-30462) was sealed after the owner allegedly failed to pay Rs 82,000 as house tax. He had issued a cheque to the MC which bounced.

Man found dead on rail line
Khanna, September 29
An unidentified body of an aged Sikh man was found on a railway track near Bhattian village today morning. The gang-man saw the body and informed the railway police which took the body to railway station. The police said the deceased was aged about sixty years. No one has claimed the body as yet. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital, Khanna, for post-mortem examination.

Residents flay PSEB over encroachments
Ludhiana, September 29
The issue of encroachments by jhuggi dwellers in E-block of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar turned into a major embarrassment for officials of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust and the Punjab State Electricity Board, when residents lambasted both departments for not taking any action against these encroachers.

Cocking a snook at the orders of the Commissioner of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC), some residents of Green Field Colony on Pakhowal Road have demolished a wall of a public park to use it as a backyard and other purposes.

Factory mishaps claim 3 lives
Amloh, September 29
Three factory workers were killed in separate incidents at different factories in Mandi Gobindgarh within two days. One of the deceased, Survesh Kumar (34), hailing from Mohamadpur in district Mao of Uttar Pradesh, was working at Sagar Alloys.

Poll process starts for 5 panchayat seats
Amloh, September 29
The election process for the vacant seats in five gram panchayats began today. Mr Harminder Singh, SDO, Public Health-cum-returning officer, Amloh block, said election would be held for the vacant seats of Shiraj Majra sarpanch (general category), Dadheri sarpanch (SC women), Majra Manna Singhwala panch (BC), Jassran panch (SC) and Kumbhra panch (general).

The local Youth Forum observed the 98th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh yesterday. Mr Mudit Mohindra, president of the forum, Mr Joginder Singh Kirti, vice-president, Mr Khushal Singh Jaggi, adviser, paid tributes to the martyr.

Residents getting turbid water

Residents of street number 10, Walia Colony, Haibowal, have complained of dirty water being supplied to them for the past two days. They said their repeated complaints had no effect on the authorities concerned and they were continuing to suffer.

Snake in water supply
Ludhiana, September 29
A resident of Vishwakarma Colony today found a live snake in fresh water supply at his house here today. Mr Tejpal Singh, a resident of house number 12567 in street number six of the locality, said a live snake fell into his bucket along with fresh water while he was filling it up under a tap in the house at around 1 pm.

NRI booked for fraud
Jagraon, September 29
Apar Apar Singh of Badhnikalan village under Lopo police station has been booked by the police under Section 420, IPC, on the complaint of Jagjit Singh of Nangal. According to the information Apar Apar Singh, who has now settled in Italy, who while in India had received Rs 8 lakh from the complainant at Agwar Gujjran, Jagraon, for sending him abroad.

Koshish-2005 gets under way at PCTE

Koshish-2005, a seven-day-long Inter-Class Literary-cum-Cultural Festival of Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE), that started on the PCTE campus on September 24, with literary events, will end on October 1. Cultural events added zest to Koshish-2005 in the presence of 11-member delegation from Eastern University, Sri Lanka (academic partner of PCTE) on a 15-day study tour to the PCTE, Ludhiana.

A two-day declamation competition organised by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Vichar Manch at Punjabi Bhavan concluded here yesterday. The competitions were held by the manch for urban students to pay tributes to Martyr Bhagat Singh.
