Villagers’ efforts go down the drain as bridge collapses

The gushing waters of the Sutlej have virtually thrown cold water on the efforts of residents of 20 villages who had taken the initiative of constructing a bridge on their own across the Jassowal drain.

Jawahar Nagar water sample fails
Ludhiana, September 28
Belying the claims of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) that all water samples collected from gastroenteritis-gripped Jawahar Nagar had cleared the tests, the district Health Department today said one of the samples, tested by the PAU microbiology lab, had failed the test.

The Samaj Sudhar Action Committee, Ludhiana, has condemned the embassies of USA and European countries and the High Commission of Canada for charging high fees for visas without providing decent facilities to relatives of those going abroad.

Police fails to trace missing youth
Vishal Ludhiana, September 28
A 21-year-old youth, Vishal, hailing from Dhandhari, here has been missing since September 1 and complaints to the local police could not yield anything. An undermatric, Vishal left his home on September 1 morning but did not come back. His mother Gulshan Rani said he had no enemies and was in a good frame of mind when he left the house.

5 booked for assault, theft
Jagraon, September 28
Pala Singh, Puran Singh, Bhagwan Singh of Madepur, Rattan Singh of Akuwal and Jit Singh of Huzar have been booked for allegedly stolen cycle and Rs 5,000 from the premises of Jindo Bai of Madepur and assaulted Jindo Bai and Karamjit Singh with sharp-edged weapons.

9 booked for murder attempt
Jagraon, September 28
Rajinder Singh Lakha, Happy, Pamma, Kamaljit Singh, Bagga Singh, Gian Singh and 3 other of Dango allegedly assaulted Jarnail Singh of Lohgarh with an intention to kill him with sharp-edged weapons.

Science fair held

A science fair was organised at Sh Lal Bahadur Shastri Public High School. The fair was inaugurated on Monday. A variety of working models on sciences, mathematics and information technology were put on display.

State-level Lok Adalat for criminal cases

In order to streamline the dispension of speedy justice, the Ludhiana Sessions Division has decided to hold a state-level Lok Adalat to dispose of compoundable criminal cases on November 26.

DC orders fast-track courts for NRIs

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can heave a sigh of relief following the decision of the state government to set up fast-track courts to deal with the revenue cases of NRIs.

Mann keen on revving up Punjabi cinema, music 
Ludhiana, September 28
After a hiatus of four years, Dil Dol Gaya — a new music album of popular singer Harbhajan Mann was released this week. Harbhajan Mann, before going to Canada to shoot a video of one of its songs, called an impromptu press conference in the city yesterday evening. When asked what took him so long to come out with a new album, he said, "During these four years , I made two films in Punjabi which have proved to be very successful."

Apollo doctors perform rare cardiac surgery

When city resident Jagdish Kumar Sharma (42), an engineer, was admitted to the ICCU of SPS Apollo Hospitals here with complaint of sudden onset of breathlessness and heart failure he did not have any idea that in surgically treating the cluster of his complex congenital heart problems doctors would be creating a history of sorts and performing world’s second such cardiac surgery successfully.

Kila Raipur in boys’ section and the Ludhiana wing in girls’ section bagged titles in the hockey (U-19 years) of the 51st Punjab State Inter-District Games conducted here. Kila Raipur lads beat Faridkot and the Ludhiana wing defeated the Kairon wing of Amritsar to emerge champions.
