Apple procurement picks up as govt relaxes norm

Shimla, September 23
The decision of the government to relax the condition of minimum size for bulk purchase of apple under the market intervention scheme has provided a fillip to procurement.

There was hardly any procurement under the scheme for the greater part of the harvesting season as the government had laid down a condition that “pittu”(extra small size) fruit would not be purchased. Further, only fruit having a diameter of more than 60 mm was to be procured under the scheme.

Since the growers mostly sold the ‘pittu’ to the government procurement agencies not much was procured in July, August and the first week of September. In fact, upto August 31 only about 1,800 tonnes of apple had been procured.

However, procurement picked up after the government relaxed the condition of minimum size and allowed fruit as small as 50 mm in diameter to be procured. Over the past two weeks over 8,000 tonnes of apple had been procured and with almost 25 per cent of the crop yet to be harvested the figure was likely to go up.

In all over 47,000 trucks of apple had moved out of state till yesterday. So far 1,72 crore boxes of apple had been exported out of the state, which was just 10 lakh boxes less than last year when the highest ever production of 2.63 crore boxes was recorded.

The crop has been delayed by about 20 days due to the early onset of monsoon. Harvesting is in full swing and daily 850 to 900 trucks of apple are leaving the state to various markets across the country. Plucking of fruit is over in the lower and mid-hills and the process is on in the high altitude areas of Kulu and Shimla. Harvesting is yet to begin in the most parts of tribal Kinnaur, where over 15 lakh boxes are likely to be produced.

The Horticulture Department had initially estimated a production of 2.53 crore boxes but as per the latest assessment it was likely to range between 2.30 crore and 3.35 crore boxes. Still it would be the second highest production after the last years record output.

UPA govt failed to check inflation, says Shanta
Our Correspondent

Nurpur, September 23
Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar has said the Manmohan Singh government in Delhi is being run by AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and the CPM through remote controls.

He was addressing a press conference at Jassur, near here today.

He said the UPA government had failed to formulate any people-friendly policy and check the rising prices of essential commodities like sugar, onion and pulses.

“The government, having control over the marketing of sugar being produced by as many as 500 sugar mills in the country, can bring down the rising prices of sugar by releasing additional quota in free sale market”, he added.

He said the Union Government had curtailed the allocation of funds to Himachal Pradesh under the Prime Minister Gramin Sarak (PMGS) scheme and no new roads had been sanctioned for the state.

Attacking the Virbhadra Singh government in the state, he said the anti-people policies of the state government had made the lives of common people miserable.

Talking about the silver jubilee celebrations of the political existence of the BJP to be organised at Palampur in Kangra district on October 9, the former Union Minister informed that the national BJP president would address a mammoth rally.

Transportation of cement hit
Tribune News Service

Shimla, September 23
Transportation of cement at the two major plants in the state, the ACC and Gujarat Ambuja at Barmana and Darlaghat, respectively, has come to a standstill due to truck operators’ strike.

Nearly 20,000 tonnes of cement is dispatched every day from the two plants. The Federation of Himachal Industries has blamed the government’s inaction in the matter for the woes of industries.

Mr M.P. Mittal, chairman of the federation, lamented that despite the government’s assurance to resolve the stalemate the transporters of Barmana and Darlaghat continued with their strike on the second day refusing to lift cement from the two plants.

He said the FHI representatives had met the Chief Minister last week who assured them that the truck unions would not be allowed to stop the work of the industry but no action had been taken in the matter. The demand of the truckers to increase the freight rates in the wake of the recent diesel hike is unjustified and uncalled for as they were already charging 16 per cent higher freight from the industry against the notified rates of the government.

Ayurvedic facility sought in hospitals
Our Correspondent

Nurpur, September 23
The Himachal Pradesh Ayurvedic Manufacturers Association has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, to promote the Indian system of medicine by following the new policy of the Government of India in which ayurvedic and allopathic medical facilities were available under one roof.

Mr Ashok Sharma and Mr Upendra Gupta, state president and general secretary, respectively, of the association in a statement here today demanded that at least one ayurvedic doctor should be appointed in the civil hospitals all over the state so that the people could avail of the facility of allopathic as well as ayurvedic together.

They lamented that due to indifferent attitude of the state government, the ayurvedic medicine industry had been facing closure and programmes like panchkarma launched by the government to promote ayurvedic medical system flopped. They said the government had opened ayurvedic dispensaries in remote areas where a majority of the people were deprived of ayurvedic health facility. “As a sequel, 150 such dispensaries are going to be closed in the state,” they added. The association underlined the need to appoint ayurvedic doctors being spared after closure of rural dispensaries in civil hospitals where the allopathic health facility was being provided by the state government.
