USA says Dawood “very much” in its sight

New Delhi, August 30
As Pakistan insisted that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, whose deportation is sought by India, is not in its territory, the USA today said the fugitive is “very much” in its sight and it would like to see individuals like him apprehended.

“Individuals like him... we would like to see them apprehended,” American Ambassador David Mulford told reporters here on being asked about Dawood, a designated terrorist by the USA, and said to be in Pakistan.

“He is very much in our sight,” Mulford said without elaborating.

India yesterday sought the deportation of Dawood and 30 others during the Home Secretary-level talks but Pakistan said the underworld don was not in the country and lived “somewhere else”.

Asked about reports of terror camps continuing to operate in Pakistan, Mulford said, “The USA wants these camps to be disbanded”.

He said President George W. Bush had taken up the issue with his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf.

Mulford said the USA regarded Pakistan as a “valuable ally” in the war on terror and that Islamabad was itself taking action on this problem in that country and focussing on it.

He dismissed suggestions that India had compromised with its sovereignty in the nuclear field by entering into an agreement with Washington on the supply of civilian nuclear energy. — PTI, UNI
