ABOHAR
2 crushed to death
: Balwinder Singh and his mother-in-law, Gurmeet Kaur, were crushed to death near Sachkhand Convent School by a Punjab Roadways bus. Kewal Krishan, driver of the bus, took them to the Civil Hospital, but the doctors declared them brought dead.

BATHINDA
Engineers’ demand
: The Diploma Holder Engineers’ Association, in a letter to the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, has demanded that the computer diploma holders should be made eligible for the posts of computer teachers in government schools of the state.

HOSHIARPUR
Youth killed: Harjinder Singh, a son of Jaspal Singh of Doinana, was allegedly killed by Sukhwinder Singh and Harwinder Singh of the same village on Tuesday. According to police sources, Sukhwinder Singh and Harwinder Singh killed Jaspal Singh after a quarrel while playing play-cards. The Tanda police has registered a case under Sections 304 and 34, IPC, against Sukhwinder Singh and Harwinder Singh on the complaint of Paramjit Kaur, mother of the deceased.

JALANDHAR
Peddler held: The police on Tuesday arrested Paramjit, a resident of local Qazi Mandi, for allegedly possessing about 35 sachets of smack. Rajinder Sharma, SHO, police division No 8, on tip off laid a trap and arrested Paramjit.

Janamashtami:
Janamashtami was celebrated at Chanda Mama School. A feast was given to “Bal Krishna” and his friends by “Radha” and her friends. They all sat on the grass in the “jungle” under the shade of trees and ate goodies made of cow’s milk.Banana leaves were spread in front of them to serve as plates. The children enjoyed the feast provided by the school and went home happy singing, “Jai Krishna, jai Gopala”.

CONTEST: A drawing and painting competition was held at Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Moti Nagar, Ludhiana. Topics relating to various aspects were given to students who tried their skills and vied with one another to sketch drawings on the canvass. A landscape was the chief attraction and won applause from one and all.

PATHANKOT
Sentenced: Mr H.S. Mann, Judicial Magistrate, First Class, on Tuesday sentenced Satnam Singh to one year rigorous imprisonment for rash and negligent driving resulting the death of a woman.

PHAGWARA
Cultural function: Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, organised competitions in declamation western songs, solo, dance, theatre, skit etc on Tuesday. Results: declamation Harpreet 1, western song and solo Ritu Bhalla 1, dance antique group 1. In theatre Jyoti Wakia was adjudged the best actress.

ISKCON chief: H.H. Gopal Krishna Goswamiji, governing body commissioner and spiritual master of ISKCON, arrived at Hare Krishna Dham, Sector 36, here on Wednesday from Mauritius. He is on a world tour to preach the gospel of Lord Krishna. He will fly to Russia after attending the Janamashtmi celebrations here.

Mangat opens lab: “Computer education is must for every student and the PTA should come forward to supply more computers for the students,” said the Director Public Instruction (School), Chandigarh Administration, Mr D.S. Mangat, who was inaugurating a mathematics lab at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19-C, here on Wednesday.

Labour societies: The Administration has decided to encourage formation of labour and construction societies in order to encourage employment opportunities among unskilled and semi-skilled workers. Mr R.K. Rao, Deputy Commissioner, said the eligibility for the registration of such societies is a minimum of 11 members who all should be residents of Chandigarh. The societies can participate in tenders and take up construction and labour work in the city.

N-E handcrafts on display: Attractive items from seven north-eastern states are currently on display at Lajpat Rai Bhavan where a special exhibition of NE handlooms is on under the aegis of NE Handicrafts and Handloom Development Organisation. The exhibition has been sponsored by Government of India’s Ministry of Development of NE Region and is sponsored by the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles.

Janmashtmi on August 26: Nav Yuvak Janmashtmi Festival Committee, Mauli Jagran Complex, is organising a festival of Janmashtmi at Ramlila ground, Mauli Jagran, on August 26. The President of the local unit of the Congress, Mr B.B. Bahl, would inaugurate the function.

Medical camp held: A medical check-up camp was organised by the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress (Colony Cell) at Mauli Jagraon here today. Mr B.B. Bahl, President of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee, inaugurated the camp. A team of doctors from the General Hospital, Sector 16, conducted the camp.

Sanghi’s conduct to be discussed: A special meeting of the House of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) will be held on August 25 to discuss the conduct of a nominated councillor, Mr P.C. Sanghi. Earlier, 13 councillors of the MCC had sought the removal of Mr P.C. Sanghi for his “continuous misconduct and misbehaviour” with councillors and officials over a period of time.

HISAR
College staff seek review: The Haryana Private Colleges Non-Teaching Employees Union has urged the state government to review its decision of giving a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the dependents of government employees on their death instead of giving them jobs. This was stated by Mr Rai Singh Litani, general secretary of the association, here on Monday.

KAITHAL
Councillor attacked: The newly elected Municipal Councillor from ward No 9 Om Parkash Narula and his family members were allegedly attacked by one of defeated candidates and his supporters. On the complaint lodged by Mr Narula the police has registered an FIR against Himansh Chawla the defeated candidate, Sham Sahni, Narinder Gosain, Ashok Kalra, Rajinder Lal, Sonu Chawla and others under Section 323, 452, 148, 149 and 506 of the IPC.

Panipat
Youth electrocuted
: One person was killed and four others were injured in different parts of the district. Mohinder, a resident of Atawla village, electrocuted when he was taking his bath at a tubewell. In another incident, four persons were injured when their truck collided with an other truck at Samalkha.

SONEPAT
8 injured in clashes: As many as eight persons, including three women, were injured in clashes which took place at Gopalpur and Khanda villages in the district on Monday. The police has recorded the statements of the injured and started investigations.

Husband,  in-laws held: The Baroda police has arrested Bitoo, his father Mahavir and his mother Chameli in connection with the dowry death case registered against them on the complaint of Mr Lala Ram, a resident of Nidana village, alleging that his daughter Meena was murdered by them following their failure to meet the demand of a motor cycle in dowry.

BILASPUR
Youth given prize: The police has given a cash prize and an appreciation letter to Vibhore Sharma son of Purushottam Sharma of the Baba Bangali (Raura) sector for preventing a theft in a road-side shop.

CHAMBA
Poverty blamed on illiteracy: The lack of education is the root cause of backwardness and poverty thereby proliferating the main problems like increase in population and giving rise to grinding penury, observed Mr Sagar Chand Nayyar, a former Education Minister in a statement here on Tuesday. Mr Nayyar asked the elite to motivate the illiterate to get education as most of the schemes of the government were focused on imparting education.

KUMARHATTI
Labourer killed: A migrant labourer was killed when a rack containing iron items fell on him in a factory at Parwanoo on Tuesday night. Shamshu Din from Uttar Pradesh was declared brought dead by doctors at the ESI Hospital, Parwanoo. The deceased was doing some welding work in Niti Raj Private Limited in Sector 2 when the rack balance got disturbed and iron pipes, angles and sheets lying in rack fell on him. A case has been registered.

NAHAN
Road mapping process: Mr R.S. Negi, Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, presiding over a meeting of officers of the PWD, I&PH, and Revenue Department on Tuesday said that road mapping process had already been undertaken in the district and it would be completed soon. He said these officers would meet on Saturday at every tehsil in the district and accelerate the process.

SHIMLA
Advisory board: The State Minimum Advisory Board has decided to constitute a working group consisting of representatives of employers, trade unions and labour and employment to suggest the minimum wages and schedule of employment. The decision was taken at the meeting of the board held here on Tuesday which was presided over by Mr Raj Krishan Kaur, Agriculture Minister, who also holds the portfolio of Labour and Employment. The working group would submit its report within three months.

Minister’s denial: Mr Harsh Mahajan, Animal Husbandry Minister, on Tuesday ridiculed the statement of Mr Mohinder Singh, a former minister, regarding discrimination in the allocation of funds and said he was just raking up the issue.
