200 illegal colonies to have civic amenities

The residents of around 200 undeclared colonies in the city have something to rejoice. The colonies would be authorised by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, (LMC), which will provide civic amenities to the residents after levying development charges.

3 fresh cases of cholera reported
No let-up in cases of water-borne diseases
Ludhiana, July 19
The attack of gastroenteritis and other water-borne diseases, gripping the mega city for the last more than 10 days, appears to have taken a turn for the worse as three cases of cholera, all children between the age of two and five years, were admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here during the last 24 hours.

Bus falls into Sirhind canal, 5 hurt

Five passengers were injured when a private bus going from Samrala to Ludhiana via Doraha fell into the Sirhind canal when the driver while trying to overtake tempo at the level crossing at Rampur village, today.

It was a day of protests at the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation before the start of the general house meeting here today. Residents of New Vishawakarma Nagar, HL, HM and HE labour colonies falling in ward No. 17 laid a siege at the main gate of the MC office and did not allow their area councillor to attend the meeting.

Model-turned actress Lisa Ray plans to get married soon. The svelte cat-eyed girl admits that she is involved in a “beautiful steady relationship which she desired to eventually culminate into marriage.” Lisa was here in connection with a promotional tour for Rado watches. Dressed in a long skirt and a black waist coat, Lisa who kept journalists waiting for 45 minutes, apologised for the delay attributing it to “the love and warmth of Punjabis, a lot of whom she had to meet during her short visit”. “I am extremely happy to be here. The love and warmth exuded by the Punjabis is simply touching,” she said, after a short programme bhangra dance that was presented as a welcome to the actress.

Woman sets herself ablaze, 2 held
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 19
A woman of Sujapur village in Ludhiana tried to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze after a scuffle with three persons of the village who had come to her house complaining against her alleged vindictive behaviour towards their college-going girl. The police has registered an FIR under Sections 306, 511 and 34 of the IPC and arrested two of them.

Life term for 3 in murder case

The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.P. Bangarh, has sentenced three youths involved in the abduction and murder case of Sunder Lal, owner of Ms Pal Medical Agency, near Kalyani Hospital, Jagraon to rigorous life imprisonment.

Advocates go on strike in Samrala
Samrala, July 19
All members of the local bar association abstained from the court work today and also decided to abstain for tomorrow as well, in protest against the alleged false case registered against a senior advocate, Mr S.K. Vashishat, by the police at Machhiwara last week, according to Mr Lavneet Kumar Sharma, secretary of the bar.
