The local roads leading to Annandale helipad and Bharari were also blocked by landslides. There is a demand for handing over the Annandale road to the PWD as the local municipal corporation has allegedly not been able to maintain it properly. Trees worth Rs 1.20 cr felled
Shimla, July 15 In all 385 trees of deodar, kail and rai have been felled in connivance with the officials of the department in two different forest areas. In the first case 259 trees, including 177 of deodar, 81 of kail, were felled in the Guthan demarcated protected forest. The total volume comes to 531 cubic metres. In the second case 126 trees with a standing volume of 269 cubic metres were axed illegally in Kehar, Challan, Kehrali and Balali forests. Such a large number of trees cannot be cut overnight. Felling had been going on for the past more than two years and the fact that the field staff failed to detect it only indicates the connivance of the officials. Ultimately, it came to light only when Tirath Ram, a resident of Kasadhar, a
complained to the department two weeks ago. The flying squad of the department, which looked into the complaint, found that the trees had been felled over the past 18 months. While the forest ranger concerned, a deputy ranger and the beat guard have been suspended in connection with the Guthan felling, no action has been taken against the higher officers. Sources in the department point out that such a large number of trees cannot be felled without the blessings of the higher officers. It has been decided to hand over both the cases to the enforcement department and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has already written to the additional director general of police concerned. The Theog Forest Division has over the last few years earned notoriety for forest scandals. This is the for the third time over the past four years that major scandals were detected in the division. In the past officers of the department and Forest Corporation were suspended but no action was taken. Those involved in scandals not only went scot free but also got promotions. |

Nathpa picks up steam
Shimla, July 15 The silt content at the Nathpa intake continued to be about 7,000 ppm, but the engineers worked on the strategy that drawing less water from the dam will slow down its speed and it will carry less quantity of silt into the head race tunnel. Initially, an attempt to run two of the six generating units was made but the level of silt, though reduced, remained high. However, when only one unit was operated the level of silt came down to 4,500 ppm at the powerhouse. As a result it was possible to operate one unit to generate about 6 million units of power. The project was shutdown on June 25 and the nigam has suffered a loss of Rs 190 crore since. |
