HC clears path for Naya Gaon NAC

Virtually clearing the decks for the formation of a notified area committee or a nagar panchayat for Naya Gaon, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today vacated the stay imposed by it on the November, 2001 notification of the Punjab regarding the constitution of NAC.

Eye flu most common infection this season

Acute conjunctivitis or eye flu is back in the city. In the prevailing humid and rainy conditions, this viral eye infection is keeping the city ophthalmologists busy as more and more residents are complaining of redness and irritation in their eyes.

Mohali to have spinal injury centre

First phase of Regional Spinal Injury Centre, Mohali, which includes operation theatre, OPD and eight rooms for patients, would be functional by this year end.

Ind Area sampark centre to be operational soon

As a befitting sequel to the success story of the existing sampark centres in the city, the Union Territory is all set to have another centre functioning in Sector 47 within the coming fortnight. Work on the centre to be set up in Industrial Area, Phase I, is nearing completion.

Petroleum dealers to go on strike from July 18
Chandigarh, July 13
Perturbed over the “indifference” of the government and the oil companies towards its demand of raising commission, the Chandigarh Petroleum Dealers Association has decided to proceed on an indefinite strike beginning July 18. Announcing this, the president of the Association, Col HS Kapoor, said they had been forced to resort to an indefinite strike despite the fact that it would inconvenience the public.

Delimitation panel yet to hold meeting

Silver jubilee celebrations of Press Club

The Press Club of Chandigarh will be celebrating its silver jubilee on July 15. The foundation stone of the club was laid on this day in 1980 by the then Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh, Mr J.C. Agarwal, and since its inception the club has evolved as a major nerve centre and a collective symbol of the identity of the journalist community in the city and the region.

Body of youth found

A decomposed body of a 25-year-old Nada village resident was found from Sukhna Choe near Kaimbwala village under the mysterious circumstances, last evening. However, the police while quoting the family of the deceased ruled out any foul play behind the death.

An unidentified headless body was found near the upcoming Chandigarh-Ludhiana railway track at Jagatpura village here today. The head of the victim, aged around 20 years, was found a few metres away from the spot where the torso was lying.

Thieves struck at the BJP office in Sector 2, hardly at a distance of 100 yards from a police post, and decamped with goods and cash worth thousands of rupees late last night.

Wait continues for the parents of 16-year-old boy, who had gone missing from city under mysterious circumstances four months ago. Gulzari Lal, dejected father, said his son Shankar left his house on February 28 in the afternoon and did not come back.

24 LPG cylinders seized
Mohali, July 13
As many as 24 LPG cylinders stocked illegally in two houses were seized by officials of the Food and Supply Department during a raid here today. According to Mr R.K. Mann, Food and Supply Officer, out of the 24 cylinders seized 12 were empty.

Grant of precious 15 minutes to examinees lauded

The decision of the Central Board of Secondary Education to allow 15 more minutes to examinees of the board classes has been welcomed by teachers and students alike. While they are unanimous that it will allow students to attempt the paper in a better way, the CBSE’s disapproval over conducting a number of pre-boards has not gone down well with most of them.

PU denies admission to rank holder
Chandigarh, July 13
Panjab University has refused to acknowledge the toil of a deserving student. Ravi Kumar failed to secure admission to M Sc (Hons School) in microbiology despite the fact that he got the first rank in the entrance test conducted for the admission to the course by Panjab University.

Inactive and sedate lifestyle in the city continues to invite diseases for its residents. High on heart ailments, the residents do not lag in diabetes, with more than 6 per cent of the city residents between 35 to 54 age group and more than 10 per cent of population above 55 years of age suffering from the disease.

Most of the SAI coaches functioning in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh have been transferred to various state coaching centres and SAI training centres or centres run at schools and colleges in the region.
