Hundreds of acres submerged in Sirsa
Tribune Reporters

Sirsa, July 8
Hundreds of acres of agriculture land was submerged near Sikanderpur village, near here, after the Rangoi nullah developed cracks. Cotton and paddy crops were damaged in over 200 acres as the authorities failed to take timely action.

The incident took place this morning on the Hisar Road, which affected Sikanderpur and Bajekan village.

According to villagers, the cracks developed as the nullah was overflowing due to an excessive water discharge from Sirsa. Villagers said that they had warned the irrigation officials not to discharge excess water after filling tanks at the waterworks on the Barnala road and in the Chhatargarh Patti area.

Officials of the Irrigation Department and the district administration reached spot to assess the situation.

SONEPAT: The Yamuna river passing through the Khadar tract in the district continues to be in spate and a large tract of land between the river and 48-km-long earthen bundh between Baga and Dahesra villages has been inundated by the swirling water of the river.

According to a report, standing crops in several thousand acres land in the river bed area have been submerged in the water. The water is likely to cause extensive damage to the standing crops of paddy, jowar, maize and vegetables.

Meanwhile, officials of the district administration maintained that the situation was under control and the water of the swollen Yamuna was causing no damage in the district.

REWARI: Of the 15 villages in the district which were hit by flood waters yesterday, Mundi and Bas Batodi were still in the grip of flood waters.

Flood water which entered scores of houses in the low-lying peripheral area of Mundi village, 12 km from here, was still standing there. The situation in Bas Batodi too was reportedly grim.

There were reports that the telecom system as well as the power supply were paralysed in the villages.

The Haryana Roadways, which had suspended buses on the Rewari-Kanina-Mahendergarh road via Mundi, resumed its services today.

FATEHABAD: Incessant rains lashing the area of the past two days have put the normal life in disarray in the district. Almost all roads and streets of Fatehabad and its surrounding towns have been waterlogged. Rainwater has entered houses in many areas of the town.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Phateh Singh Dagar, today convened a special meeting of officers and municipal councillors to find ways to meet the situation.
