Two killed as heavy rains lash region Chandigarh, July 5 Forty-year-old Bhajni and her five-year-old daughter Harman were killed and seven others injured when the roof of their house collapsed in Dadiala village of Gurdaspur in Punjab, police sources said. Chandigarh was the wettest in the region recording 127.8 mm of rain, a weather office spokesman told PTI here. Ambala (103.6 mm) and Nangal Dam (67 mm) were the wettest places in Haryana and Punjab, respectively. Panchkula, Karnal, Kalka, Raipur Rani and Morni in Haryana and Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Nangal Dam and Balachaur in Punjab were among the places lashed with rain. Widespread rain lashed parts of north-west India since last night as monsoon has been vigorous in Haryana and active in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Monsoon remained active in Punjab with many areas, including Amritsar and Ludhiana, experiencing rain. Patiala measured 16.9 mm rain while Nangal Dam reported 67 mm and Balachour 54.1 mm rainfall till this morning. Several areas in Himachal Pradesh also received monsoon rain with Shimla recording 84.4 mm, Bhuntar 34.4 mm and Sundernagar 52.6 mm rainfall. Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, also had monsoon rain, recording 63.4 mm. Moderate to heavy rain is likely to occur at most places in Himachal Pradesh and many places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours, according to the Meteorological Department here.
