Residents reel under blackouts

Blackouts have become a common occurrence in different parts of the city over the past week, adding to the woes of the citizens already at their wits’ end against the sweltering heat. Not comfortable are also residents of Mohali and Panchkula where the cuts drag for more than a day in a large number of the cases.

Two of the five ITBP jawans who landed in the PGI Emergency following a massive heat stroke yesterday are still in a critical state even as the ITBP temporarily suspended the training of jawans at BTC, Bhanu. While the city recorded a high humidity level of 52 per cent today, the PGI received seven fresh cases of heat strokes.

Shattered liquor bottles strewn all over the place and a “torture cell” — that’s allegedly what devotees of several villages around Chandigarh reportedly discovered from the “quarters of Nihang Ajit Singh Poolha” near the Sector 39 gurdwara.

Nihang Ajit Singh Poolha — accused of being involved in the cultivation of the poppy husk in a ground near the Sector 39 gurdwara — may soon find himself facing queries. For, the Chandigarh police is reportedly looking into a complaint seeking reinvestigation of the cultivation matter.

Semal, one of the most sturdy and splendid of ornamental trees dotting the region, is losing its foliage. Like other affected species like “Imli”, silver oaks and pilkhans, the tree is reporting mortality in the region.

A tragedy was averted today as the Fire Department staff evacuated stranded persons from a house. in Sector 22-B, where an electricity meter had caught fire.

PSHRC seeks report on Mohali hospital
Chandigarh, June 23
The alleged erratic functioning of the Civil Hospital, Mohali, has come under the scanner of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission. Acting on a complaint of an NGO, the Lawyers for Human Rights International(LHRI), the PSHRC has sought a status report from the Punjab Government by August 8.

Two held for threatening Sector 43 resident

One person was arrested while stealing a bicycle today. In a separate incident, the police arrested two persons for threatening a Sector 43 resident and two others for possessing smack. A mobile phone was stolen from the city during the past 24 hours.

Bank employee killed in mishap
Chandigarh, June 23
A 28-year-old Mani Majra resident working with a bank, Pradeep Kumar, was killed after the motor cycle he was riding was hit by a truck in Sector 26 late last night.

2 city pacers for MRF academy
