Freedom fighter’s daughter harboured Hawara
Jupinderjit Singh and Iqbal Singh
Tribune News Service

Khanna, June 18
Her husband is an Army man fighting terrorists in the trouble-torn Kashmir valley. Her father is a freedom fighter. But she, Hardeep Kaur, is facing the serious charge of being the main harbourer of Babbar Khalsa International chief Jagtar Singh Hawara, and also the key to his post-Burail jailbreak life and activities.

An ironic character in the Hawara episode, Hardeep Kaur’s relationship with Hawara remains as mysterious as it was when her name was associated with him about 10 days ago. But her other relationships are a talk among police and media circles.

A family with seven sisters and a brother lies shattered with the turn of events. Almost half are behind the bars now. The brother is bedridden for the past several years and the parents are too old to rebuild the family.

The foremost is about her husband, Karamjit Singh, who is a soldier posted in the strife-torn valley and is risking his life to fight terrorism and protect his motherland. On the other hand, his wife is being arrested for abetting the activities of an alleged terrorist. While Army men are not allowed to carry their weapons on leave, the woman was literally sitting on a huge cache of arms, ammunition and RDX, as per the police claims.

The police investigation so far has not found any involvement of the army man in the episode. The Khanna police would, however, still question him and has sought assistance from the Army officers in Kashmir. A letter seeking that Karamjit should also join investigation in the case has been written to the Army by the Khanna police, reliable sources revealed.

The police has so far gathered that the Army man had strained relationship with the woman and was not meeting her frequently. Even during his last visit, he stayed with her for two days only. He had a fight with her over some issue and stayed at his relatives’ house in another town, police investigations claim.

The police wants to find out if he knew about Hawara or was upset at the presence of another man in his wife’s life.

Hardeep Kaur’s father Jagir Singh is a freedom fighter, recognised by the state government. He is in the twilight of his life. Hardeep’s brother had met with an accident over a decade ago and is bed-ridden since then. Her sisters Charanjit Kaur and Kuldip Kaur along with brother-in-law Ajaib Singh and nephew Inderjit Singh, besides another relative, are behind the bars facing charges of helping Hawara to gather arms and ammunition and harbouring his stay.
