Lend more to farmers, PM tells banks
Mumbai, June 4
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here today that Indian banks must lend more to the agriculture sector and small businesses in order to help boost the country’s economic growth. Speaking at the bicentennial celebrations of the SBI here, Dr Manmohan Singh said lending by financial institutions should reflect the changing face of economy.

Bittu, Gama get life term

Jalandhar, June 4 Daljit Singh Bittu, president of the Shiromani Dal Khalsa and a former chief of the AISSF, and his associate Gurcharan Singh Gama were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Special Tada Court here today.

Chandigarh, June 4
The votes cast in the byelections in the three Assembly constituencies of Killoi, Tosham and Hisar in Haryana on June 2, will be counted tomorrow. The process will begin at 8 a.m. The counting will be held at the district headquarters of these constituencies.

2 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan blast
Kabul, June 4
Two US soldiers were killed and another wounded in a bomb attack on their vehicle in southeastern Afghanistan, the US military said today. “An improvised explosive device detonated on June 3 near Orgun-E, killing two US service members and wounding a third,” it said in a statement.
