Sukhi parents on tenterhooks
Tribune News Service

Muktsar, June 3
It has been the longest night for Jagat Singh and Tej Kaur, parents of Sukhwinder Kaur Sukhi, a mountaineer from the city who, got stuck on the Mount Everest. Though unconfirmed reports of Sukhi returning to the base camp have relieved her parents to some extent, they are still tense.

The spokesmen for of Project Himalaya, a Kathmandu-based agency supporting Sukhi’s tour, Mr Bimal and Suman Pandey, today called up her family members and told them that Sukhi and her six companions had got stuck in a snowstorm.

They said while other members of the group had returned to their base camp, Sukhi had refused come back.

They especially requested her friend Pammi to contact her and persuade her to return. Pammi said last time when she talked to Sukhi on satellite phone, she sounded determined to make it to the top. She said Sukhi had scaled Mount Kamet Peak, Friendship Peak, Sansar Kangri Peak, and traversed the world’s highest road on a bicycle.

Meanwhile, Sukhi’s family members were hurt by reports that they had asked Sukhi not to return without completing her expedition. “We stated it in an enthusiastic way, but it was quoted out of context,” they added. They urged her to come back and not to risk her life.
