Kathunangal (Amritsar), June 3
The police today rounded up more than 300 farmers who had been blocking the Amritsar-Batala road for the past five days and took them to police station after bundling them in waiting police canters here today.

With the clearing of the road, thousands of people of the area heaved a sigh of relief as they had been using link roads to reach their respective destinations due to traffic blockade for the fifth consecutive day.

Condemning the crackdown, the agitating farmers decided to intensify their peaceful agitation by gheraoing the electricity offices and senior officials of the department. The farmer unions have convened a high-level meeting on June 11 here to chalk out the next course of action.

The Kisan Sangharash Committee Punjab and Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta) had resorted to direct action against the decision of the Punjab State Electricity Board to disconnect electricity jumpers of those farmers who had failed to pay bills. The agitating unions have appealed to the farmers (defaulters) to gherao the PSEB employees if they visit their houses /farm houses for disconnecting the connections.

It is learnt that some farmers foiled the attempts of the PSEB to disconnect the power connections in certain areas and forced them to flee.

The farmer leaders, including Mr Lehmbar Singh Taggar, Mr Sukhdev Singh Kokri and Mr Joginder Singh Ugraha, said that they would give a befitting reply to the police for lifting their “peaceful dharna”. They said their agitation would be intensified in the coming days. They warned the state government of dire consequences in case ‘fabricated’ cases were registered against them.

A large posse of policemen reached the spot to round up the agitating farmers.

Addressing the rally, Mr Jatinder Singh Chhina, a farmer leader said a time had come to offer arrests in large numbers. He alleged that the state government was making all-out efforts to ruin the farming community.
