VISITED: Mr Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, accompanied by officials of the Civil, Revenue, Drainage and Agriculture Departments visited the dhusi bundh along the Sutlej on Saturday, with a view to taking stock of the pre-monsoon condition of the bundh. The Deputy Commissioner rejected the proposal prepared by the Drainage Department for strengthening the bundh at a cost of Rs 154 lakh and asked them to prepare a new proposal.

DISTRIBUTED: The Shivalya Atma Devi Talab Ralla Mal Bhucher Prabandhak Committee organised a ‘jan kalyan divas’ at Sri Ram Sharanam Bhavan on Sunday. Pensions amounting to Rs 2,000 per annum were distributed among as many as 50 needy women. Mr Sita Ram Taneja, Chairman, Improvement Trust and Mr Lalit Mohan Pathak, president, Municipal Committee, presided over.

DEAD: Lakhbir of Heema village in the Banga area who had come to attend the marriage of a friend, died as he fell down while dancing. He was rushed to a private hospital from where he was taken to Civil Hospital but could not be saved.

FIGHT IN HOSPITAL: A pitched battle took place between two rival groups in the emergency ward of the local Civil Hospital on Saturday. A heavy police force was rushed to the hospital. It is learnt that a group clash had earlier taken place in which three youths were injured. One of the injured was hospitalised. The other group chased him to hospital, stormed the emergency ward and started fighting.

INTERACTION: The local Shiwalik Public School on Monday organised an interaction programme for its students with an old student of the school, Mr Kumar Gaurav, who have cleared the Indian Administrative Services Examination recently. Mr Kumar Gaurav, who has scored 228th rank in his first attempt, advised the students to do planned study. He said he had planned to appear again in the IAS exam to improve his ranking.

CHANDIGARH

Alumni: Sainik School, Kapurthala, would organise a mega get-together here on June 3. The highlight of the event would be old boys of the school, popularly called Sikapians, from all parts of the country as well as those based abroad, joining in along with their wives. A cultural, programme was also being organised to mark the occasion.

CAMP: The Welfare Society, Sector 45B, here organised a bone density camp on Saturday, for men and women above the age of 40 years. Over 80 persons took the test. Those found lacking calcium in the body were counselled on dietary habits and were told to exercise regularly to avoid osteoporosis by Dr Harinder Bath, MS Orthopaedics, from the PGI.

Condemned: The local unit of Vishwas Hindu Parishad(VHP) has taken exception to the publication of a book “Realities about Hinduism” by a Muslim writer. The book has nothing to do with reality and a concocted story has been published in the book, said a VHP spokesperson. The VHP demanded the withdrawal of the book from the market.

MEDICAL CAMP: A one-day free medical check-up camp will be organised on June 4 at Jakhaulti village in this district. Noted specialists will examine and treat the patients suffering from various diseases in this camp.

POPPY HUSK SEIZED: The Murthal police has arrested the owner of a dhaba along with his associate following recovery of 38 kg of poppy husk from their possession during a raid conducted by the police on the dhaba on the GT Road, near Murthal Chowk. The police arrested Munni Lal, owner of the dhaba and his associate, Chhote Lal, who belonged to Madhubani district of Bihar.

EFFIGIES BURNT: A large members of Dalits, including members of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes burnt the effigies of the state government and the district administration here on Monday in protest against the atrocities and excesses on members of these communities. They also held a demonstration and raised anti-government slogans.
