10 feared buried under avalanche

Srinagar, May 30
About 10 persons are feared to have been buried under a avalanche early this morning at Kapran in South Kashmir, about 80 km from here.

Sources said the 10 persons, belonging to Bakkarwal and Gujjar families and some animals had been buried. Relief and rescue teams have reached the spot.

Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of South Kashmir, Sheikh Owais Ahmad, said a police team had also rushed to the area. He gave no further details.

Official sources said the rescue teams headed by Station House Officer (SHO) of Dooru police station had reached the spot after covering the distance by foot. Sources said it took about four hours for them to reach on foot from the last motorable point and there is no communication network. ‘’It will take some more time before the details about the incident reach the police control room at Anantnag,’’ they said.

Fresh snowfall in the upper reaches and rains in the plains have disrupted normal life in the valley. In February this year, severe snowstorms in the area and avalanches had left at least 200 persons dead. — UNI
