Major arms haul at Mumbai port
Tribune News Service

Mumbai, May 21
The Mumbai police and customs officials have unearthed a major arms smuggling racked involving the Chotta Rajan gang, sources said.

The racket was unearthed late last night when police and customs officials acting on a tip-off seized sophisticated assault rifles and guns from a container docked at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai.

The haul included 37 guns used by military snipers, gun-sights and related equipment, the sources said.

According to the police, the weapons were seized after a tip-off.

Subsequently, the police arrested Bharat Nepali, said to be a member of the Chotta Rajan gang. It is suspected that the weapons were sent from either Dubai or Singapore.

The JNPT is for long suspected to be a major base for smuggling in contraband into the country due to the high volume of traffic there.

Rather than rummage through each and every container, the customs have been checking consignments at random.

This has allowed smuggling of contraband with the connivance of corrupt JNPT officials and customs officers posted there, the sources say.
