N.D. Sharma

Bhopal, April 11
As many as 52 bodies have been recovered from the Narmada at Dharaji in Dewas district where a large number of persons had washed away on the night of April 7 following a sudden release of water into the river from the Indira Sagar Dam.

The district administration had taken this colossus tragedy so lightly that it was putting the toll at two or three the next day.

Chief Minister Babulal Gaur visited Dharaji today and promised stringent action against those found guilty. He has already ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The Chief Minister also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Jamuna Devi, who also visited Dharaji, has demanded a judicial probe into the tragedy.

A large number of devotees had gathered to take a holy dip in the Narmada at Dharaji, about 115 km from the district headquarters, on the occasion of Bhootdi Amavasya on the night of April 7. Sudden release of water from the Indira Sagar Dam, without warning the district administration downstream, caused panic among the devotees and led to a stampede.
