Janata Dal (U) leader Nitish Kumar's move to cobble up a majority for a non-RJD government formation in Bihar ran into serious obstacles today as LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan remained firm on his demand of not taking outside or inside support of the BJP. Even the CPI refused to extend support.

Thousands attend Mass for Pope
Vatican City, April 3
Pope John Paul II’s body was put on display before the world today as more than 100,000 persons packed St Peter’s Square for a huge open-air Mass in memory of their “father and shepherd”. Television images showed the body lying in state for the first time since the pontiff died yesterday, aged 84.

PM to persuade Pak to let politicians travel in bus
New Delhi, April 3
Soon after his return from a successful visit to Mauritius, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said his government would persuade Pakistan to allow political leaders to board the inaugural journey of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service. The historic bus service would unite divided families across the border after more than half a century.

Buses arrive in Srinagar amid tight security
Jammu, April 3
Ahead of the historic journey on the Srinagar-Uri-Muzaffarabad road on April 7, a dry run of the 19-seater bus which would ferry Kashmiris across the border would be conducted tomorrow under tight security arrangements. Policemen keep a strict vigil in front of the special buses in Srinagar on Saturday that will carry the passengers to Muzaffarabad on April 7.

Large-scale violence was reported in various villages in the district during polling for the panchayat elections today. While three persons, including a polling agent, and two brothers were shot dead in Mandothi village of the district, clashes were witnessed in Naya Gaon and Orangpur villages.

With the death of Pope John Paul II, a chain of events laid down by centuries of papal tradition swung into action, but who will emerge as the next pontiff is a guess no one dares to hazard. A pope from Italy, reverting to habit? An African pontiff? How about Latin America, or India? Ivan Dias, the 69-year-old Archbishop of Mumbai, carries the best hopes of the Indian Subcontinent.
