General exhorts corporate houses to help war widows
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 28
The Chief of Army Staff, Gen J.J. Singh, today exhorted captains of the Indian industry to come forward and look after interests of wounded soldiers and war widows.

Speaking at a function organised by the War Wounded Foundation of India and attended by retired and serving officers, besides representatives of corporate houses working with the foundation and war-wounded disabled personnel, the General highlighted deprivations and risks faced by soldiers during their career.

He said soldiers who had lost limbs expected the nation to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations. “While help comes from different quarters in fits and starts, there is a need to institutionalise the system to provide continuity and stability,” he said, adding that the thrust should be towards generating employment opportunities in rural areas to help such soldiers.

The foundation was formally incorporated on August 28, 2002. Prior to this, the organisation was assisting in the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen by running projects like Healing Touch and Mission Vijay II.

The mandate of the organisation is to establish ties with the corporate sector for assistance in the rehabilitation of wounded ex-servicemen. It has already helped in the transition of 120 ex-servicemen, including several soldiers wounded during wars, into successful entrepreneurs.
