HC reinstates sarpanch after 21 months
Machhiwara, March 19
Gurdeep Singh was declared winner on day before yesterday — 21 months after contesting the election for the post of sarpanch of Marewal village falling in Mangat block of Ludhiana district. A decision to this effect was given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Drug peddler arrested
Ludhiana, March 19
Bringing to light an increasing level of drug addiction in the city, the special staff of the CIA wing of the city police today arrested a narcotics smuggler who was allegedly supplying smack to over 30 youngsters daily for the past several months, the police said here today.

Rs 1,640 cr for drinking water, sewerage in cities
Ludhiana, March 19
The state government has drawn up a comprehensive plan of Rs 1640 crore to provide basic amenities including sewerage and drinking water to entire urban population in all the cities of state.

VAT proposals unfair, say lawyers
Mandi Gobindgarh, March 19
The local District Tax Bar Association at a meeting chaired by Mr Ashwani Abrol, district chief of the association, decided today to submit a memorandum to Mr Sardool Singh, Minister Excise and Taxation and to the Commissioner Excise and Taxation, soon on the alleged discriminatory provisions of VAT regarding sales tax practitioners.

Encroachment removed
Machhiwara, March 19
Bid of encroaching 1.75 acres of Nagar Panchayat land in the local SJS Nagar by the members of Balmiks came to an end with the intervention of the SHO Machhiwara. The community vacated the occupied land by removing pillars and barbed wire late evening yesterday.

Five held for planning to loot petrol station
Khanna, March 19
The Payal police has arrested five persons who were allegedly planning to loot a petrol station from near the Sidhu Nursing Institute on Friday night. The police has also recovered some weapons from them.

Doctor couple held for female foeticide
Ludhiana, March 19
A joint team of the Kotwali and Division No 2 police today arrested a doctor couple on the charges of abetting female foeticide. Dr Avtar Singh Chabra and his wife Dr Sharanjit Kaur working with a hospital in Kutcha No. 11 in Field Ganj here were nabbed by the city police. The doctor couple was booked under Section 315 and 201 of the IPC besides under the acts prohibiting illegal abortion.

Police told to submit detailed information about abductions
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 19
The Punjab Police authorities have been directed to collect specific information about the abductions and kidnapping that took place after January 1, 2001, in the state. The process has reportedly been initiated to enable the state government face the questions on the issue likely to be made by the Opposition leaders during the ensuing Vidhan Sabha session.

Senior citizens resent exclusion from SGPC jatha to Pakistan
Ludhiana, March 19
Resentment prevails among two senior citizens of the city whose names were not included in the list of pilgrims’ jatha for Baisakhi pilgrimage to be sent by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee, (SGPC) to pay obeisance at historical gurdwaras in Pakistan.

Send result cards by registered post, PU urged
Machhiwara, March 19
Many students who did not receive their result cards have flayed the Panjab University authorities for sending these important documents through UPC instead of registered post. “Why does the university charge a huge fee if it can not send the certificates through registered post,” asks Davinder Kaur, a students.

Degrees conferred on 600 students

Ludhiana, March 19
SCD Government College here held its annual prize distribution function today. Major-Gen Himmat Singh Gill was the chief guest on the occasion. Ms Indra Bhatia, Principal of the college, welcomed the distinguished guests and read the annual report of the college. As many as 600 students received degrees at the function. As many as 266 students of MA/MSc, 132 students of BCom, 63 BA students, 61 BSc and 100 BA evening college students got the degrees.

Nursery students given farewell
Ludhiana, March 19
Disney Land Nursery Students were given a farewell by the school authorities. The function started with “Ganesh Vandana”. Anmol Verma was attired as Ganeshji. Anisha did the “aarti” and Raghav, Dipanshu, Saral, Simran and Prince were the priests who performed the puja. They won many a hearts.

College function held
Samrala, March 19
NR College of Girls Samrala here organised a cultural programme on its campus. Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, MLA was the chief guest. Many parents of the girls also participated in the programme. Dr R.D. Sharma, retired Principal and Director welcomed the MLA and other guests.

Farewell party organised
Doraha, March 19
Students of BA II of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, organised a farewell party for their seniors at the Dr Ishwar Singh Memorial Hall on Thursday. Pawanpreet Singh was declared ‘Mr Farewell’, Umesh Sharma was ‘Mr Well Dressed’ and Ramwinder was adjudged as the ‘Most Decent Boy’.

Be a vegan as being a vegetarian gives you more energy. Last year Amitabh Bachchan, the most popular actor of the century, was voted the most popular vegetarian icon. Shahid Kapoor was quite close to him in popularity. Several other stars are giving up meat and turning vegetarian as it is more healthy.

Gurdial Singh’s statue unveiled
Ludhiana, March 19
In memory of Gurdial Singh, former international basketball player who had won laurels for the country, a statue was installed at his ancestral Gurhe village, tehsil Jagraon, in this district yesterday. Mr Rajdeep Singh Gill, ADGP, Punjab, and president, Basketball Federation of India, formally unveiled the statue of Gurdial Singh, an Arjuna awardee, popularly known as ‘Bhaiya’.
