Modi gets stormy reception at Kolkata
Our Correspondent

Kolkata, March 13
The Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, was “confined to the airport’s VIP lounge for over three hours today following a demonstration by Congress and CPM supporters. This was Mr Modi’s first visit to the city after the Gujarat riots.

The police had to make a lathi charge and fire tear gas shells in the air for rescuing the Gujarat Chief Minister and escorting him to a hotel in a police vehicle.

The Gujarat Chief Minister was in the city on a short visit in connection with an RSS function. He is scheduled to leave the city tomorrow.

According to official sources, Mr Modi reached the city on an afternoon flight from Ahmedabad en route Delhi.

Soon after landing at the airport, Mr Modi came across angry demonstrators, raising slogans: “Modi go back”, killer Modi leave the place” etc.

The police had to apply force and chase the demonstrators out of the airport.

RSS and BJP leaders, who had come to the airport to receive Mr Modi, alleged that plain clothes men had taken part in the demonstration along with CPM and Congress workers. Congress leader Salman Khursheed, he was also present at the airport at that time, said the demonstration was so quick and spontaneous against Mr Modi that the police could hardly do anything.

Advani defends Modi

New Delhi, March 13
BJP chief L K Advani has yet again defended Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, under criticism from his party legislators for his style of functioning, saying there are no complaints about his administrative capacity.

In an interview to NDTV’s “Walk The Talk’’ programme, Mr Advani said the rebellion in Gujarat would soon be sorted out by the party.

“Gujarat is among the best administered states in the country because of the leadership of the government there,” he added.

Mr Advani’s statement comes a few days after more than 50 of the 127 MLAs met former Chief Ministers Keshubhai Patel and Suresh Mehta and former Union Ministers Kashiram Rana and Dr Vallabh Kathiria. — UNI
