The raid was conducted at a shop and warehouse of Mr Kundan Singh Rataula, a resident of Shahdra in East Delhi. The police team seized empty cartons with the Tata Motors name and logo and stickers bearing the Tata Motors logo.

The police officials said that they have intensified the campaign against the sale of fake spare parts.

Chinks in MCD drive against stray cattle
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 5
The yesterday’s incident of killing two persons by the rampaging bull proves the MCD’s failure to catch stray cattle and lodge them in the Delhi government’s ‘cow sadan’.

Though the MCD Commissioner, Mr Rakesh Mehta, had claimed a number of times that the corporation caught stray animals and lodged them in cow sadan.

This was not the case yesterday, or so it seems.

As a rule, buffaloes are sold somewhere outside Delhi whereas bulls and cows are kept in cow sadan. Dogs are kept in a separate place and NGOs have been given contract to sterilise them. Obviously, the rules are not being followed.

This was not the first incident caused by a bull. Bulls had injured the elderly people in the past also.

The Municipal Commissioner was not available for comments on the incident. Besides, the bull that was shot dead after the incident in Baldev Park, Preet Vihar area of East Delhi, showed symptoms of rabies, an infection it could have contracted from the dogs that had received no shots from the corporation, according to sources.

Rabies propagates itself by attacking an animal’s brain, making it vicious.

When the infected animal bites another, the virus is transmitted through saliva. The disease is transmitted either through a bite or direct contact with mucous membranes—eyes, nose or mouth..

A senior officer of veterinary department of the MCD said that it was a rabid bull. It might have been bitten by some infected dog around.

“The eight-year-old bull’s aggressive behaviour yesterday came as a shock to the locality. It was a cool-tempered bull. But his aggression yesterday showed strong symptoms of rabies,” he added.

The official also rejected the MCD claims that catching male bovines did not come under its drive against roaming cattle.

The official said that the MD caught bulls only on complaints and not on a regular basis. Stray animals like cows and buffaloes are covered under the MCD drive.

“It is the MCD’s responsibility to catch stray cattle —both male and female. Does it need court directions every time to act? Can’t it act on its own,,” said renowned ‘’Common Cause’’ lawyer Meera Bhatia, who had moved the High Court over street cattle menace.

She said the High Court had given several time-bound directions to the MCD to clear Delhi of stray animals.

Victims of cattle attacks were entitled to claiming damages from the MCD for its inaction, said Ms Bhatia. A 65-year-old morning walker and a 40-year-old woman were savaged to death as the bull went amok on Friday.

Three booked for usurping college land
Parmindar Singh

Noida, February 5
All that one needs to commit a financial fraud is to have some duplicate letterheads printed and some fake rubber stamps made.

This is what an ex-manager of a college management committee in Rabupura did to illegally annex college land and start farming on it.

A case has been registered against the ex-manager and two others for occupying the land of an inter-college in Rabupura.

The officiating principal of the inter-college, Shanti Swaroop Sharma had lodged a complaint with SJM-II of Gautam Budh Nagar.

On court’s order, Rabupura police have investigated the matter. A case has been registered under Section 420, 467, 468 and 471 against ex-manager Rajinder Singh, PTI, Vijinder Singh Ahlawat and Niranjan Singh for cultivating the school land.

It has been alleged in the complaint that ex-manager Raginder Singh had leased out 3,334 hectare fertile college land to one Niranjan Singh, s/o Rajpal Singh resident of village Nangla Narayan Singh, by using a fictitious letterhead and a rubber stamp for five years. A part of this college land has been occupied by PTI, Vijinder Singh Ahalawat of Rabupura.

The principal has stated that nobody is empowered to lease out the college land for more than three years. Moreover, not a single rupee has been deposited in the college accounts since 2000, Principal Shanti Swaroop Sharma has alleged.

The Joint Director Education, Meerut, had handed over the management of the college to District Inspector of Schools Gautam Budh Nagar on July 24, 1999 on the basis of the orders passed by Allahabad High Court vide writ No.14079-99.

The SJM II has now asked Rabupura police station in-charge to register a case against the three accused and investigate the matter further.

Tobacco most common preventable cause of death: NGO
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 5
The Global Sehat Foundation, an NGO, today claimed that every year 3.9 million cases of COPD, 4.5 million cardio-vascular cases and 1.6 million new oral cancer cases are recorded in India, which are caused due to consumption of tobacco alone. These figures were given on the basis of a research made by experts.

This problem is set to escalate further with people across genders and age groups taking to tobacco in different forms, experts said.

Agreeing that quitting is not a solution to the menace of tobacco, with many people taking back to the habit because of withdrawal symptoms and only mere 3 per cent emerging successful in the end, the medical and cardiac fraternity are of the view that it needs a holistic solution.

The Chairman of the Global Sehat Foundation, Mr Sudershan Banerjee, said that the NGO envisions a world free of maladies. Sehat is currently working to address the menace of tobacco and will invite like-minded individuals, health practitioners, medical fraternity, corporates, NGO’s as well as competitors, who develop or market alternatives to tobacco to share a common platform in the crusade to build a world free of maladies.

Tobacco use is emerging as the world’s largest single preventable cause of illness and death. Smoking makes the heart beat faster, raises blood pressure and increases the risk of hypertension and clogged arteries, and eventually causes heart attacks and strokes.

Smokeless tobacco also raises cholesterol, contributing to the risk of heart disease. Women who smoke are at a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than women who are non-smokers. Further, the risk of heart attacks among women, who use oral contraceptives, is 10 times greater among smokers than among non smokers. Passive smoking reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry even amongst the non-tobacco consumers.

BJP for recall of Goa Governor
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 5
The Delhi Pradesh BJP today alleged that the Governor of Goa, Mr S, C. Jamir, acted as a “Congress agent” and demanded that he should be recalled and the government led by Manohar Parrikar be restored.

Protest against French turban law
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 5
A large number of Sikhs today held a demonstration in the Capital to protest against the law banning turbans in French schools. With placards denouncing Paris’ sanctions on their religious headdress, they shouted anti-France slogans and vowed to continue their protests until Sikh turbans were exempted from the ban.

Sikhs are angry because the legislation was not put before their 6,000-strong community in France during the consultation process.

They called the ban the greatest irony, recalling that a large section of the 138,000 Indian troops that fought in Belgium and France during World War II were turban-wearing Sikhs. Today’s demonstration near Jantar Mantar was led by one of the members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC).

The protesters said the French Government needed to understand the significance of the turban. Later, the DSGMC leaders submitted a memorandum with the French Embassy over the issue. The Indian Government was asked to take up the matter with the French Government.

Haute designer pottery for daily life draws crowd
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, February 5
Have you heard of the ‘functional art or pottery? If no, come to the 19th Surajkund Crafts Mela.

The stall number 215 here is no ordinary craft hut, but is the only place in this internationally famous fair where one could not only get knowledge about this ‘functional art’, but also have the chance to own an artistic piece.

The objects of art are not put to daily use normally, but the artistic creation on show here has a daily use also. That’s the beauty of it!

Ravi Chawla of Chandigarh is the person behind this unique art form that has been drawing the attention of every visitor to this Mela.

Located just opposite the Chaupal here, this hut having the ‘polystone designer pottery’ has the ability to stop anyone who gives a look here, says Saurabh, an engineer based here. He claimed that he was so impressed by the pieces there that he could not decide which item to buy, on the first day of his visit.

Saurabh said he went again to the spot along with his family, a day after to get one of the pieces.

Ms Erica, a visitor from Cape Town in South Africa, who also got a piece of mural from here, claimed that she had not seen such beautiful creations of pottery anywhere else.

She said she would recommend her friends to visit the place, as this had a wide variety of items of traditional and modern art at one location.

The polystone pottery items here include wall murals, sculpted items, stained glass and glass fusion work, stone work (kundan), masks, wall brackets, console, centre tables, mirrors, pillars, plant pots candle stands, and idols of the religious deities.

According to Chawla, the demand for the ‘functional art’ had been growing, as it could be used by the owner in different ways.

She says the unique thing about her artwork was the finishing and the durability, which was lacking in many other artworks. She says the colours used by her were polyurethane-based and do not fade.

It is also claimed that the design and the concept of the art work produced by her was original and different from anyone.

She says that though the demand of such items had been tremendous from many parts of the country and also from some parts of the world, she has no plan to put this work on Internet website, as she fears that this may get copied and sold illegally.

About the idea of having a patent, she says the process was quite complex and lengthy. While about 60 type of items have been displayed here, the most sought-after products include the centre table, wall mirror, murals and stone-studded pottery.

A centre table having a female idol as the base has been quite popular and nearly every visitor enquires about it, says Mr M.P.S Chawla, who manages the stall. He said orders had already been placed for some items.

Chawla has the credit of doing the glass work of the residence of the former Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, at Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

Some of her artifacts were sought by several teleserial producers for decoration of the sets and also demanded by the gift gallery owners at various places.

A workshop for the production of such pieces has been set in the industrial area of Chandigarh, where a large number of students of art, visit for study and do get a chance to contribute, according to their skills. Though not having any formal training for herself, she not only wants to popularise the art, but also desires to experiment, to keep with the changes in the lifestyle of the people, she says.

“No art could survive if there was no change,” she believes.

Mr George Verghese of Development Alternatives said the campaign, which began in 1996 with just five schools in Delhi, had grown to cover schools in 30 cities and towns all over the country.

“The aim is to reach virtually every city and town in the country, that is more than 500 cities and towns, to make environment management universal,” he said.

AC engine developed to pull Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, February 5
An air-conditioned railway engine, WAP-1 assembled and readied in Ghaziabad electronic loco shed, will be shortly used to pull Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express train at a speed of 150 km an hour.

Formally dedicating the AC engine to the nation, General Manager of Northern Railway R.R. Jaruhar said even though Ghaziabad’s electronic loco shed was set up 30 years ago, it is one of the most modern loco sheds in the country which is used for overhauling and repair of railway engines used in Northern Railway.

Mr Jaruhar said many trials were undertaken for developing an air-conditioned railway engine. There was a lot of rattling sound when the engine raced at 150 km an hour and the driver felt a little shaky. Suitable techniques were then evolved to take care of the drivers’ problems and a proper communication system had been developed.

The General Manager said a lot of improvements were effected in the foreign engines to convert them into AC engines, suitable for Indian conditions. ABB, a foreign company, had also commended the engine after evaluating it, the GM said.

The Bhopal-Delhi track, Mr Jaruhar said, had been readied to withstand the trains plying at a speed of 150 km an hour on it. The GM also inaugurated the 3-AC coaches in the loco shed and inspected other three engines readied to run at a speed of 150 km an hour.
