IT officer held for taking bribe
Ludhiana, February 1
Sleuths from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today arrested an Income Tax officer at Ayakar Bhavan, Rishi Nagar here, while taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a city-based industrialist for giving a favourable ‘Income Assessment Report’.

Trust to allot PUDA flats to slum-dwellers

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has decided to handle the issue of slum-dwellers in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar sympathetically by offering to allot PUDA flats to them on installments.

Man, wife get 7-year jail for murder
Ludhiana, February 1
A fast track court has sentenced Nardev Singh and his wife, Gurwinder Kaur of Sham Nagar to undergo rigorous imprisonment of seven years, on the charge of causing death of Surjit Kaur (mother of Nardev Singh).

1 held for kidnapping
Ludhiana, February 1
Four months after a minor boy was kidnapped and taken to Muzzaffarpur in Uttar Pradesh by his alleged kidnappers, the Haibowal police has arrested a member of the kidnapping gang from Raipur Nangli village in that state. Rakesh Kumar, a labourer with a stone crushing unit in the village was the only absconding accused in the kidnapping case of 4-year-old Abhishek, son of a tailor, Sushil Kumar. He was kidnapped in October last year and traced after eight days to Falawda village in Uttar Pradesh. The three kidnappers — Munshi Ram, Anil Kumar and Chandgi Ram — were nabbed but Rakesh Kumar, in whose house the boy was kept had managed to escape.

Shopkeeper held for selling PDS wheat
Jagraon, February 1
Wheat meant for distribution through fair price-approved depots is being diverted to shopkeepers and fake records are maintained showing the distribution.

With no addition to new buses, the number of condemned buses of Punjab Roadways is on the rise. A number of buses that have outlived their age are still plying on the roads. The Road Transport Department is already facing public ire for the poor state of the main bust stand.

BJP to support bandh against VAT
Ludhiana, February 1
The trade and industry cell of the state BJP has decided to support the nationwide bandh call on February 21 against the introduction of VAT. The president of the cell and former Punjab Deputy Speaker Mr Satpal Gosain, said VAT would add to the woes of the industry.

None qualifies for Kalpana Chawla award
Mandi Ahmedgarh, February 1
The Chahal Welfare and Sports Club at Uchi Daud village has been disappointed that no student of the surrounding villages has come up to their aspirations, who can be honoured with the Kalpana Chawla award that was instituted by the organisation two years earlier. The organisation had to postpone the celebration of annual sport meet also as no family member of the deceased astronaut could spare time on schedule. However, a brief function was organised by the club at this village to pay tribute to her.

A meeting of the Nehru Memorial Society Khanna was held under the chairmanship of Mr Surjit Singh Bhatti, President of the society at which Mahatma Gandhi was remembered.

Farewell to Dr Gill
Ludhiana, February 1
Emotional farewell was accorded to Dr Rantej Singh Gill, who retired as Deputy Director(TV) in the Centre for Communication, Languages and Culture, Punjab Agricultural University here yesterday. Dr Gill had contributed in spreading the scientific knowledge generated in the PAU through television and documentaries.

Industry condemns power duty hike
Ludhiana, February 1
Industry associations here have condemned the Punjab Government’s decision of a 5 per cent hike in duty on power. Stating that the decision would come as a heavy blow for the small scale industry, representatives of associations said it would result in further increase in costs.

It is festival time at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here as its medical students are all set to celebrate a three-day cultural bonanza — “ECTOPIA 05” — at Dumra Auditorium from February 2 to 4.

IGNOU convocation put off to Mar 5
Ludhiana, February 1
The 16 convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) which was scheduled to be held on February 12 has been postponed. It will now be held on March 5.

2 classrooms inaugurated
Samrala, February 1
Two rooms were inaugurated in Government Girls Senior Secondary School by Baba Sarbjit Singh Bhalla of Faraur Wale here today. These rooms were constructed by the Parbandhak Committee, Gurdwara Sri Vishavkarma Bhavan, Samrala, and Jathedar Gurdev Singh Mushkabad.

Docs strike work amid allegations
Khanna, January 31
Doctors of the Civil Hospital, Khanna, went on strike for more than four hours today when attendants of a patient started raising slogans against doctors of the hospital. The hospital authorities called the police to control the situation. Later, SDM Jaspal Mittal reached the hospital and the matter was sorted out after compromise.

222 students examined at camp
Doraha, February 1
A total of 222 children were examined at an assessment camp organised at Government Senior Secondary School, Payal, today for the identification of disabled among children between 3-14 years.

The Aagaz Charitable Foundation, an NGO working for the cause of downtrodden today organised a free dental treatment camp in the Central Jail for women on the Tajpur Road here. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Malkiat Singh Birmi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Jails, Punjab.
