Army begins probe into killing of passengers

New Delhi, January 24
The Army authorities today initiated Court of Inquiry proceedings into yesterday's incident at Shikohabad Railway Station in which five civilians were killed after allegedly being pushed out of a train.

An Army spokesman here said a team of senior Army officials had been rushed to the incident site from Agra and Faizabad and "all assistance" was being extended to the civil authorities investigating the incident.

Describing the incident as "unfortunate", the spokesman extended the Army's assistance in the investigations, if required, and promised that the accused would be "dealt with severely, if found guilty".

Five persons were crushed to death by a speeding train at Shikohabad Railway Station after they were allegedly pushed out from another stationary train by some Army personnel.

The accused security personnel were already in police custody.

The security forces personnel who were travelling in the compartment from where the victims were made to get down have been taken into police custody.

"All assistance is being extended by the Army in order to help the civil police investigate into the incident," the press note said.

It further said that if found guilty, the accused will be dealt with severely.
