Twins asphyxiated as room catches fire

Sheer negligence on the part of a young mother claimed the lives of two one-and-half-year-old twin boys, who received burn injuries and died of asphyxiation in sleep in the New Madhopuri area this afternoon.

NRI offers Rs 50,000 for Rahul’s treatment

Ludhiana, January 17
An NRI from Vancouver, Canada, has come forward and offered financial assistance to save one-and-a-half-year-old Rahul, who is struggling for life at Christian Medical College and Hospital here. Dr Sanjiv Ahluwalia, an NRI, has decided to donate Rs 50,000 to save the child.

Model Town residents hold dharna
Ludhiana, January 17
Residents of the Model Town area staged a dharna outside the Atam Nagar police post in protest against the alleged inaction of the police in an assault case. Led by Mr Nirmaljit Singh, around 40 persons gathered outside the police post and raised slogans against the police, seeking registration of a case of attempt to murder against the assailants. The police has booked the assailants under Sections 323 and 324 of the IPC.

Cop booked for accepting bribe from BJP worker
Ludhiana, January 17
The protest organised by BJP leaders on the premises of the Division No 5 police station on Saturday evening bore fruit today with the district police booking the constable who had accepted a bribe of Rs 100 for a police verification report from a BJP worker.

The Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) has demanded the registration of a case against the manufacturers of spurious fertilizer and have warned that they will launch an agitation in case the government tries to hush up the matter.

5 Shiromani awardees honoured 
Mohali, January 17
The Sahit Sabha, Mohali, yesterday honoured five writers, who had been awarded the Shiromani Awards by the Punjab Government for their contribution to Punjabi literature. The five include playwright Dr Atamjit Singh, poet Shivnath, and Punjabi writers for children Dr Rama Rattan, Sarabjit Bedi and Hardev Chauhan.

Traffic jam due to ‘chetna march’
Ludhiana, January 17
Massive traffic jam took place in the city yesterday due to lop-sided alternative traffic arrangements made by the city traffic police for the ‘chetna march’ organised by the management of Dukhniwaran Sahib Gurdwara from the city to Manji Sahib Gurdwara, Alamgir. The traffic jam remained for over five hours.

Rs 15 lakh sewerage project for Doraha
Doraha, January 17
Doraha seems to be all set to acquire a completely modern look as the MC has taken up beautification work in the town on a war footing. Mr S.P Sood, acting president of the Municipal Council, said encroachments in market area had been removed. He also informed that space had been vacated for the construction of Shaheed Beant Singh Park.

Waiting hall inaugurated

An NRI, Mr Sandeep Chheena, has inaugurated a waiting hall in the office of the SDM. The hall was constructed and furnished at the cost of Rs 2 lakh. The NRI donated money for its construction.

Two brothers assaulted, threatened
Ludhiana, January 17
Two brothers were assaulted by a group of persons at Kehar Singh Nagar here last evening. The brothers, Chandresh (20) and Kangresh (17), were admitted to the Civil Hospital. In a complaint to the police, Mr Heera Lal, victims’ father, who is a paint contractor, said his elder son was sitting in his grocery store when the assailants attacked him. Later, they allegedly assaulted Kangresh.

Liquor seized, one arrested
Khanna, January 17
The police has arrested a man from Kamma Ghurala village for carrying nine bottles of country-made liquor. The accused was identified as Guljari Lal, a resident of Dau Majra village. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

Villager attacked over property dispute
Sahnewal, January 17
A resident of Sange village, near here, was injured in an attack over property yesterday. Surat Singh, son of Partap Singh of the same village, complained to the police that while he was at his home last evening, he was attacked by Kunda Singh, son of Dilip Singh of the same village. Surat Singh sustained injuries in the left arm.

Raise IT exemption limit, demands INTUC
Ludhiana, January 17
In a pre-Budget memorandum presented to the Union Finance Minister, the state units of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and the National Organisation of Government Employees (NOGE) have called for the enhancement of exemption limit of income tax from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh and exemption of dearness allowance (DA) from income tax, among other things.

Punjab Agricultural University has planned to organise more than 1,000 short-duration, vocational and in-service training courses during the year 2005-06. This was stated here today by Dr Amrik Singh Sandhu, Director Extension Education, PAU. He was presiding over a state-level workshop.

150 take part in singing competition
Ludhiana, January 17
As many as 150 students participated in a singing competition organised by the local chapter of the Sangam Kala Group here yesterday at Government College for Women. The finalists from Ludhiana will participate in a national contest to be held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on February 5.

Gobindgarh Public College, Alaur, organised its first annual function at Khanaya Lal Bardeja Lion’s Bhavan, Mandi Gobindgarh. The Lok Sabha MP, Mr Sukhdev Singh Libra, was the chief guest. The programme began with a recitation of shabad “Awal Allah Noor Upaya, Kudrat ke Sab Bande.” College students presented poems, songs, ghazals, folk songs, skits and group dance, on the occasion.

Chandigarh man convicted in cheque-bounce case
Ludhiana, January 17
A businessman of Chandigarh, Harinder Singh, owner of Horasons, Sector 43-B, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment in a cheque-bounce case. The order was pronounced by the Judicial Magistrate, Mr Sangeet Pal Singh, while disposing of complaint filed by Mr Jiwan Kumar, owner of Bharat Jiwan Dyeing Factory, Industrial Area-A, Ludhiana.

Man acquitted in murder case
Ludhiana, January 17
The Sessions Judge, Mr Harbans Lal, has acquitted Gurmit Singh, a resident of Huzra village, Jagraon in a murder case, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges levelled against the accused.

Bouquet of ghazals at Dastak
Ludhiana, January 17
Dastak — a musical evening, was organised by Dhvani. The evening started with a prayer of Ayub Khaar "Saat suron ka behta darya tere naam" rendered in the ghazal form by a well known singer Randhir Kanwal. Kanwal started the concert with Mirza Daagh Dehlvi’s “Kehne deti nahi kuchh moonh se mohabbat teri, lab”. He then sang some famous ghazals of Qateel Shifayee, like “Paraishan rat sari ha...” The third intikhab of Randhir was the ghazal maestro Jigr Moradabadi and he hit the right chord with the audience as he started “Kuchh is ada se aaj...”

Diabetes is the single most lethal, yet common disease, affecting millions in the country and the number of affected persons was rising at an alarming rate which will lead to an enormous economic burden on the families, society and the nation.

Vaccination drive launched
Ludhiana, January 17
The District Health administration has launched a special vaccination drive in the district, with special focus on rural areas and urban slums. According to Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, children up to the age of five years would be vaccinated against infectious diseases like diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, night blindness and measles under the month-long campaign till February 14.

200 examined at asthma camp
Ludhiana, January 17
More than 200 patients were examined and given medicines free of cost at medical camp, organised at the Tajpur road here yesterday. A number of prominent city doctors along with Lupin company and Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Sanjay Colony, had organised the camp.
