Tsunami pushes Port Blair further south-east

Port Blair, January 15
The December 26 tsunami that ravaged the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has changed the geography of its capital and the adjoining areas which have shifted 1.15 meters towards south-east, Surveyor-General of India Prithvish Nag said today.

“Our initial studies carried out in Port Blair region show that the land mass has shifted 1.15 meters towards the south-eastern side but we are still waiting for the final reports,” he said here.

Dr Nag, who is in Port Blair presently to carry out a series of survey with his team members, said the Survey of India has 20 posts ready in different points of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. “We will collect data from all these points and compile them to get a final report,” he added.

The official agreed with reports that a few posts had been washed away from the Nicobar region, and that will “definitely hamper” the survey. But we are trying to put new such posts in different points.

They will provide us data in future.” This new posts will take “at least three months” to give a correct picture, he added. — UNI
