1 killed, 16 hurt in attack on NC candidate
Srinagar, January 15
In stepped-up violence ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, militants made a suicide attack at the highly guarded Indoor Stadium here this afternoon, only eight days after a similar attack on the Income Tax Office, where seven persons, including two militants, were killed in a 26-hour operation.

Terrorists sneaking in despite fencing, says Gen Vij
New Delhi, January 15
Fencing along the Indo-Pak border has helped in bringing down the infiltration to almost negligible levels, although the terrorists were still making attempts to sneak in from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief of Army Staff General N.C. Vij said today.

Even as Haryana Congress leaders despatched their supporters to AICC headquarters here to protest the distribution of tickets for the next month’s Assembly elections, party President Sonia Gandhi is learnt to have called all candidates for a meeting on January 19.

Faced with rebellion within the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee over ticket distribution, its president, Mr Bhajan Lal, in his characteristic style today sought to placate the rebels by offering to accommodate them in the government.

Tsunami pushes Port Blair further south-east

The December 26 tsunami that ravaged the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has changed the geography of its capital and the adjoining areas which have shifted 1.15 meters towards south-east, Surveyor-General of India Prithvish Nag said today.
