Having failed to forge a formal
alliance with its UPA allies, the Congress today decided to go ahead and
contest 80 seats in next month’s Bihar assembly elections. This
indicated the likelihood of “friendly contests” among the UPA partners
in several seats.

today directed the Haryana Government to transfer the district police
chiefs of Ambala and Panchkula, Mr Des Raj Singh and Mrs Mamta Singh,
respectively, with immediate effect for allegedly violating the model code
of conduct.

A special court in Mumbai, which is
hearing the Bilkis Bano rape case, today framed charges against 19 of
the 20 accused persons. Judge U.D. Salvi of the special court did not
frame charges against Dr Sangeeta Prasad as she was ill and undergoing
treatment.
