Supreme Court grants bail to Shankaracharya
New Delhi, January 10
The Supreme Court today found various flaws in the Tamil Nadu police probe against Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati in the Sankararaman murder case and ordered his immediate release on bail exactly after two months after his arrest, saying that no worthwhile evidence has been brought to its notice to sustain his detention.

Tamil Nadu police arrests junior seer
Chennai, January 10
While followers of the Kanchi Mutt burst crackers and celebrated the Supreme Court granting bail to the Shankaracharya, the Tamil Nadu police this evening barged into the mutt at Kancheepuram and arrested the junior pontiff on the same charges.

The election scene in Bihar started getting clearer today with the Janata Dal (U) agreeing to a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP to make an united effort to end the 15-year rule of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the state.

SC not to intervene in BCCI election issue
New Delhi, January 10
In a major boost to newly elected Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Ranbir Singh Mahendra, whose election had come under a cloud due to various litigations, the Supreme Court today refused to intervene in the matter and allowed the board to conclude its adjourned Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the issue.

The Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, who has initiated a fresh Panthic debate by presenting a ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) to Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, acting chief of the Damdami Taksal at the Takht, has said that the SGPC and other Jathedars had adopted a ‘biased approach’ by giving recognition to the ‘parallel group’ of the Taksal, headed by Baba Ram Singh.

Dada Saheb Phalke Award for Mrinal Sen
Mrinal Sen New Delhi, January 10
Noted filmmaker Mrinal Sen will be the recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for 2003 for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, it was announced today. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam would present the award to the director at the 51st National Film Awards function here on February 2.
