Dual citizenship to those who
migrated after Jan 26, 1950: PM

Mumbai, January 7
Accepting the long-standing demand of overseas Indians, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today announced granting dual citizenship to all those who migrated from India after January 26, 1950.

Inaugurating a conference of overseas Indians attended by nearly 2,500 delegates from 61 countries, the Prime Minister also asked the Indian Diaspora to invest in infrastructure development in India as well as in extending education to the vast population. He promised that the government would work towards creating an environment conducive to the "growth of spirit of adventure and enterprise".

"I happy to announce that we have decided to extend the facility of dual citizenship to all overseas Indians who migrated from India after January 26, 1950, as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship under their local laws," the PM said at the third Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas amid thunderous applause from the audience.

Hoping that a day would come when every single overseas Indian who wished to secure Indian citizenship would actually be able to do so, he said, "I pledge to you that I will work in that direction." — PTI
