Guwahati, December 16
Alert railway personnel today averted two major train accidents on the Northeast Frontier Railway in Assam and West Bengal.
Linesman Purna Kanta Barua spotted a bomb, fitted with wires, on the tracks between Kamrup and Laopani section of the NF Railway in Nagaon district. The linesman cut one of the wires, ran back to Kamrup and stopped a high speed diesel train at the nick of time, NF Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Trikalagya Rava told reporters.
The train was carrying petroleum products from Numaligarh refineries. It was brought back to Kamrup station. Train services, suspended for two-and-a-half hours on the line, resumed at 4 PM.
Incidentally, Assam witnessed a series of ULFA-triggered bomb blasts during the past few days.
Another major rail mishap was averted at Siliguri in North Bengal when the Sealdah-bound Down Kanchenjungha Express avoided a collision with a car at an unmanned level crossing between Kishanganj and Panjipara stations.
