5 jawans killed as ultras storm CRPF camp

Sopore, December 3
Five CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide attack on their camp at Sopore in north Kashmir today. “We are going for a final assault to kill the militants inside the camp as all CRPF personnel who were inside have been rescued,” a senior CRPF officer said.

However, unconfirmed reports said one of the two militants who stormed the camp near the Sopore telephone exchange was killed and efforts were on to eliminate the another.

The CRPF officer said early morning, two militants hurled hand grenades and opened fire on the sentry posted on the main gate of the telephone exchange building in the densely populated area.

He said the security forces in the nearby picket also returned the fire and in the ensuing clash, three CRPF personnel died on the spot and two were wounded.

The bodies of the CRPF personnel were recovered while the injured were admitted to hospital where they died, he said.

Reinforcements were rushed there and the area had been cordoned off.

He said all CRPF personnel who were inside the camp at the time of the attack had been rescued while civilians in the nearby houses were also shifted to safer places.

The officer said the final assault was delayed as there were CRPF personnel inside the camp and civilians in the adjoining houses.

The CRPF became the main target of the attacks after it replaced the BSF in most parts of the valley. So far, about 20 CRPF personnel have died and scores injured in such attacks since the first incident in the Dal Lake area.

SRINAGAR: One person was killed, while the security forces busted three hideouts and two militants surrendered in Jammu and Kashmir overnight, an official spokesman said today.

He said militants shot dead Shamus-uddin Zargar at Handwara last night.

Two militants surrendered along with arms and ammunition in Udhampur district of the Jammu region last night.

Meanwhile, the security forces busted three hideouts and recovered arms and ammunition and ration at Gandoh in Doda district last night. — UNI
