Case against gas agency ordered

Cracking the whip on gas agencies creating an artificial shortage of LPG cylinders in the district, Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma has asked the Senior Superintendent of Police to register a case against Sant Gas Service under the Essential Commodities Act and other provisions of the law.

Government homoeopathic doctors have flayed the decision of the government to reinstate a former Registrar of the Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicine who had allegedly been dismissed from service on the charges of grave financial irregularities, misuse of official position and tempering with council records. The government had reinstated Mr Sunil Gautam on November 11 even though he was facing criminal charges and had been dismissed from service between
1995 - 1997.

Youth federation to launch drive against unemployment

Activists of the All-India Youth Federation today took a pledge to launch a struggle to seek employment for all, on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Kartar Singh Sarabha. The youths, who had come to the local grain market to take part in a rally from all over the state resolved to create awareness among the present generation.

Rs 3.15 lakh snatched from employee

In a daylight robbery, two unidentified motorcycle-borne armed persons snatched a bag containing Rs 3.15 lakh from an employee of a Delhi- based construction company at Rishi Nagar, Block-C, today.

Studies have suggested that people should ensure that their children do not abuse the animals lest they resort to human abuse in the later stages of their life. According to the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, “research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals often move on to violent acts against their fellow humans”.

2 booked for blockade of FCI godowns
Jagraon, November 17
Two truck drivers, who allegedly blocked the passage of FCI godowns in Hathur by parking their trucks after removing its wheels, have been booked by the police under Sections 341 and 383, IPC, according to a press note released by Mr Rajiv Ahir, SSP, Jagraon.

Six held for gambling
Ludhiana, November 17
The Jodhewal police yesterday arrested Ashwani Kumar, Gopal and Narinder Singh and registered a case against them under the Gambling Act. The police said this morning that the accused were gambling in a park in Sunder Nagar. A sum of Rs 600 was seized from their possession.

‘Peter rehras’ rule the road

The country-made “Peter rehra” also known as Maruta and Ghaduka can be seen plying on city roads in spite of a ban on plying it. Interestingly, the state government has been launching drives to check the use of this vehicle in rural areas. Even the local traffic police allows the vehicle to ply.

Cash award scheme for toppers launched
Ludhiana, November 17
The Department of Social Security has launched a cash award scheme for toppers in the state. Students who got first three positions in classes VIII, X and XII during the current year were awarded cash awards of Rs 5,100, Rs 3,100 and Rs 2,100, respectively, at the 48th State-level Children Day Function organised by the National Children Fund Committee at Nehru Sidhant Kender, here today.

Seminar on image of women in fiction

A two-day national seminar on the image of women in English literature started at Guru Nanak Girls College here today. With the aim of familiarising postgraduate students of English Literature with the manner in which women are depicted in Indian fiction in English, the seminar also focused on changes it has passed through since the inception of the novel.

Punjabi version of ‘Waiting for Godot’ staged

The play ‘Waiting for Godot’ was staged at the Nehru Sidhant Kender here last evening. The play was in Punjabi and it was translated from English by Balram along with Sanjay Solanki. It was brought to the city by media artists.

60 diabetics march to spread awareness
Ludhiana, November 17
Christian Medical College and Hospital organised a medical camp in connection with World Diabetes Day here today. Nearly 130 diabetics attended the camp. Blood tests were conducted and diet counselling was provided free of cost. An exhibition and a display on diet were also organised.
