Dharmani, Yuvraj to Punjab’s
rescue
Chandigarh, November 8 When Uttar Pradesh were tottering at 166 for six yesterday, they looked in an unenviable position. At least formidable batting line-up of Punjab made one think so. But the visitors deserve credit for fighting doggedly. Thanks to an unbeaten century from a resolute Rohit Prakash (112), who carried his bat through, first they prolonged their first innings to give it measure of respectability. Then their bowlers bowled their hearts out and pegged the Punjab total to a reasonable score. Veteran paceman Ashish Winston Zaidi led the Uttar Pradesh attack remarkably well. He was rewarded for his persistence with three wickets, while young left-arm seamers Salabh Srivastava and RP Singh lent excellent support to Zaidi and scalped one wicket each. Left-arm spinner Praveen Gupta did not lag behind and chipped in with the wicket of wicketkeeper Chandan Madan. Except for Pankaj Dharmani and Yuvraj Singh none of Punjab batsmen could stay at the wicket facing a determined rival bowling attack. After the departure of Yuvraj after a well-compiled half century, veteran middle order batsman Dharmani held the innings together. At close, he was keeping Punjab hopes alive, unbeaten at 83. Chasing Uttar Pradesh’s total of 269, Punjab were off to a disastrous start. Openers Ravneet Ricky and Reetinder Sodhi were back in the pavilion with just 23 runs on the board. While Sodhi scored 11, Ricky’s contribution was a 7. Punjab suffered another setback when skipper Dinesh Mongia was back in the pavilion immediately thereafter. He was ruled out off a back-pad catch and the batsman palpably looked dissatisfied. Yuvraj Singh and Pankaj Dharmani then rescued the innings with a 71-run fourth-wicket stand before a well-set Yuvraj fell to an injudious pull shot to be caught at fine leg off seamer RP Singh. Yuvraj’s 52-run knock was studded with eight scorching fours. Wickets again fell in quick succession before the innings was steadied again by a 57-run seventh-wicket stand between Dharmani and Amit Uniyal. The partnership seemed to be taking the match in favour of Punjab untill the dismisal of Uniyal, who fell to a doubtful lbw decision at the fag end of the day’s play. Uniyal contributed 28. Khetrapal threatens to sue Fleming
New Delhi, November 8 Khetrapal strongly denied having offered any money to the Kiwi captain and said the allegation levelled against him were a "gimmick" by the cricketer to sell his book. "I am certainly considering filing a defamation suit but I cannot do so only on the basis of media reports. We will go through the book and what is written in it and would take appropriate decision in a couple of days," Khetrapal told reporters here. The sports
promoter-turned businessman was named by Fleming as the one to approach him to join the match-fixing syndicate in 1999 in his book 'Balance of Power', written by journalist Richard Boock. Fleming said he was approached in the bar of the team's Leicester hotel during the 1999 World Cup in England by a man later identified as Khetrapal, an associate of Indian bookmaker Sanjeev Chawla. Khetrapal maintained that he had met Fleming in July, and not during the World Cup as mentioned by the cricketer,
in connection with the staging of an exhibition match for the Punjab Cricket Association, which did not fructify. —PTI |
Harvinder puts Railways back on track
New Delhi, November 8 The right-arm seamer made amends for the disappointment of the first day and picked six for 75 to rip through the Mumbai middle order and put the hosts back on track. The visitors, resuming at a healthy 261 for three, were bowled out for 361 half an hour after lunch. At stumps on second day, Railways were sitting pretty at 111 for three with Tejinder Pal Harvinder well set on 37 and Shreyas Khanolkar on 20. Harvinder made the second new ball tell as he claimed the wickets of Vinod Kambli and Ramesh Powar in the space of five balls, with only two runs added to the overnight score, to rattle Mumbai. He then returned after lunch to dismiss wicketkeeper batsman Vinayak Samant (32) and Avishkar Salvi. JP Yadav lent the right support from the other end while captain Sanjay Bangar scalped his Mumbai counterpart Sairaj Bahutule (29) who added 31 vital runs with Ajit Agarkar for the seventh wicket. Ganguly scores 27 Kolkata: Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, returning to action after a two-week injury layoff, looked in good shape during his brief stay at the wicket on the second day of the four-day match between Bengal and Karnataka here. —

Manan Chandra retains pool
title
Ludhiana, November 8 Earlier, in the semifinals, Manan Chandra had a close call against Dharminder Lilly of Punjab as he prevailed 9-7. Calm and unruffled, Chandra rode on luck to strom into the final. In fact, Manan led from the beginning and was never tested while Lilly was a trifle unlucky. The green pocket continued to give the Punjab cueist great discomfort as he missed unbelievable sitters. Lilly muffed up chance after chance and eventually lost the match. In the second semifinal, Alok Kumar was in an invincible mood as he swarmed K Ranjan of Tamil Nadu convincingly 9-2. Padma Shri and seven-time world billiards champion Geet Sethi gave away the glittering trophy to Manan Chandra after Mr Surinder Singla, Finance Minister, Punjab, did not turn up. In his message to Mr DS Bains, President of the Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association, the minister announced a grant of Rs 1lakh for the association. The Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) felicitated the cueists who had brought laurels to the state. East Bengal beat JCT, enter
final
New Delhi, November 8 Nabi’s header in the 71st minute off a superb throw by Habibur Rahman saved the day for the red and yellow brigade, who were otherwise outsmarted by the JCT team, making their first semifinal after losing to the same opponents in 1999. The final between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, who booked their berth in the summit clash beating defending champions Salgaocar SC will take place on Wednesday. When the two teams last met in the title round in 1994 Bagan had emerged winners. Nabi's winner came against the trend of play which saw the Punjab team going close a number of times before missing the goal either due to finishing mistakes or denied by custodian Rajat Ghosh Dastidar. The goal came after one of the few moves made by the Kolkatans —Nabi tried to move in through the right and was challenged by Bimal Barua. In the tussle for the ball, Nabi was pulled by the linesman for an unwieldy tackle but escaped the eye of referee Benjamin D’Silva. Getting the caution Nabi went back inside the box and then rose high above his markers to head home the goal and ran back in jubilation. —
